He licks his lips and holds his smoothie up. “Thank you.”
“Just doing my job,” I tell him and go back to work. I successfully manage to avoid him the rest of the day until the office empties, and it's just us two. Being his assistant, I can’t leave until he does. He’s also my ride, which means I was stuck loitering while he caught up on his work after taking a long lunch.
The intercom buzzes again, and I reach over and push the button. “Yes?”
“Come here.” He demands, not even bothering to look up. With a sigh, I get up and walk into his office.
“What do you need?” I ask, crossing my arms over my chest. Cole looks up and narrows his green eyes at me.
“What’s up with you?”
I shake my head and shrug, “What do you mean? Nothing is up with me.” Cole leans back in his chair, rocking a little while he observes me, his expression stoic.
“You’ve been unusually quiet today. Something is off. What’s wrong?” I sigh and rub my forehead.
“Cole, nothing is wrong. I’ve just had a busy day, that’s all.” I explain, exasperated. Cole shakes his head, gets up, and walks over to me.
“You’ve been avoiding me all day, Shayla. You’re usually in and out of my office all day. I’ve barely seen you.”
I scoff, “How would you know? You were gone most of the afternoon.” I retort bitterly and regret it instantly. I mentally kick myself when Cole nods in understanding and smirks.
“You’re angry with me for this afternoon.”
Frowning, “Why would I be angry?” I ask derisively. Cole rubs his jaw and sighs. “I honestly don’t care. What you do on your lunch break is your business.” I say and turn to leave, but Cole grabs my arm, stopping me.
“Whoa, come back here. Why are you saying it like you’re accusing me of something? Do you think I went off and had an afternoon shag with Sophie?” He snaps hotly while scowling at me. “Is that what you think?”
I pull my arm out of his hold and laugh. “Cole, I didn’t say anything. I don’t know where you’re getting this from. I honestly couldn’t care less what you did with this...Sophie.” I say her name with more venom than I had intended and curse myself when Cole's eyebrow goes up.
He smirks, “Well, I don’t believe you.”
I peer up at him and narrow my eyes, “Well, that’s your problem.” I answer and spin on my heel to leave, but he catches my wrist and yanks me back to him again. I glare up at him and take a step back, putting some space between us so I wasn’t pressed up against him so intimately.
“You’re jealous.” He states, taking a step toward me. I shake my head and retreat.
“What? Why, why would I be jealous?” I stammer with a nervous chuckle—Jesus, what is wrong with me.
Cole takes another step toward me and looks down into my upturned face. “You tell me? Why would you be jealous?”
I take a step back and gasp when my back is pressed against the glass window. Cole takes this as an opportunity and cages me in, so I can’t escape. “I am not jealous.”
He steps closer. “Mm, are you sure about that, sweetheart?” He drawls, leaning so close that our noses touch.
“Yes,” I whisper, and my mouth suddenly goes bone dry. Come on, Shayla, get it together. He’s goading you, don’t fall for it. Who the hell does he think he is? I fix my gaze to his and lick my lips. Let’s turn this around on him. “You look disappointed, Cole,” I breathe, brushing my nose over his. “Did you want me to be jealous?”
Cole smiles knowingly, biting his lip, “Maybe a little.”
I smile back and raise a brow, “Well, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I’m not in the least bit jealous. You can spend as much time with Sophie as your heart desires.” Cole looks into my eyes, and a slow smile appears on his face.
“So, you wouldn’t care, even a little If I had her like this…” He drawls while he gathers my arms up over my head as he presses me up against the wall, his hard, muscular body covering my own robustly. Our foreheads pressed together, we stare into one another's eyes.
“No,” I answer, desperately trying to keep the tremor from my voice. Cole’s lips hover over mine teasingly.
“What if I did this,” He whispers, dipping his head and running his velvet tongue over my pulse point. I gasp involuntarily, and I feel my legs wobble in the heels I was wearing. My eyes close, I bite down on my lip to keep from moaning when he sucks my flesh, making my head swirl. Oh damn. “Would you care then?” He breathes huskily in my ear.
“No,” I answer breathily and force my eyes open when I feel him pulling away to look at me. His gaze was hot and hungry, and it took every last bit of control I had to not give in to him and have him bend me over his damn desk. He laces his fingers with my own and pushes his forehead to mine, his bottom lip between his teeth.
“I can do this all night, baby.”
