"What do I do?" I inquire, averting my gaze from Cole to Dr Bennet again.
"Try and do things that you used to do together. Go to memorable places, do activities you would do together to try and jog his memory." He suggests and squeezes my shoulder. "Don't be angry or resentful toward him because it's not his fault he doesn't remember you. Keep telling yourself it's just a symptom of his injury. Just try to empathize with his situation; he's feeling very overwhelmed right now." I nod, closing my eyes. "He's alive. That's the main thing."
"Okay."
"I'm going to order a CT scan and run a couple of tests to see what we're dealing with, all right?" He tells me with a reassuring smile, and I nod, turning my gaze to Cole again, listening attentively to whatever his mother is telling him.
"He's going to remember you, Shay. How can he not?" Josh states with a frown looking over at his best friend.
“Andif he doesn't? Then what, Josh? Do I just let him run off back to Sophie again?" I glower, pacing back and forth. "I don't know if I have the strength to do this all over again. At least last time he loved me, now he doesn't even know me." I cry, shaking my head despondently.
"Shayla, listen to me. If anyone can pull Cole through this, it's you. He fell in love with you before without even knowing it, and he will again, I promise you. You just be your beautiful self with him, do all the things you did together the first time around." I sigh deeply and close my eyes.
He did have a point.
After all, the mind may forget, but the heart never will. Right?
