Taking a deep pull from the bottle, I inhaled the night air.
This was something that I needed, fresh air in the country. I couldn’t stand the hustle and the bustle of the city. Not to mention, the city had too many people.
Nevertheless, ten years later, noises that my ears perceived as a threat caused my body to go on high alert.
That was why they made me the Sergeant At Arms. I could hear the sound of a bullet being loaded in the chamber from half a mile away.
That’s what happened when you had to have every sense on high alert while out on missions.
Palming the dog tags in my pocket, my mind drifted to a place that I didn’t want to ever remember.
But just as the memories started to flood in my mind, I heard something and looked over to see my beautiful neighbor’s face in the cracked open window. She had her head thrown back laughing.
I watched as she bent and lifted her daughter and played tickle monster.
It wasn’t until a few minutes had passed that all the memories had flown away and in its place was seeing her beautiful smiling face and the sound of her laughter.
Just as I finished my beer, I saw a shooting star streak across the night sky. And what did I do? I wished upon a shooting star.
Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that it would end up coming true.
And only in the best way imaginable.
