She smirks. “I don’t kiss and tell.”

She sashay’s away. The entire interaction is innocent enough. But something about it leaves me feeling… on edge.

“Adrian,” I say while watching Madelyn as she flits from table to table during the evening dinner rush before disappearing into the kitchen. “Remember what you taught me about if I was looking for someone somewhere. Whether it was in a seedy, underground bar or some upscale lounge or restaurant? Remember where you told me the first place to start?”

“I taught it to you. Of course, I do.”

“Humor me.”

“You talk to the bartender first and after that, the servers if there are any…”

“Because they usually see and come into contact with everyone who comes through the door,” I say. “Would come in handy if you had something to hide and something you wanted to keep people away from if that was your job. Let a higher up somewhere know if someone was poking into something they’d prefer them not to. Or to deal with it without informing the higher up.”

It doesn’t take long for either Viper or Wyan to catch on.

“Madelyn,” they say simultaneously.
