“Come on Annie. You know as well as I do that nothing is going on between us. Let’s put this to rest now and get on with our lives.” He leans in close to her and whispers something to her. The shock on her face is a picture and the colour has completely drained from her cheeks.
Buckie sits back on the sofa and now he’s the one with the smug smirk on his face. Annalise looks as though she’s going to be sick.
“Uh, yeah, there’s no truth in those rumours. I mean people make these things up all the time, but you should never listen to celebrity gossip.” She can’t bring herself to make eye contact with the host or Buckie. Her self-assured mask has well and truly slipped. As much as I’m not a nasty person, she deserves everything she gets.
“I actually have a significant other, don’t I Annie.” Every time he calls her Annie, she visibly recoils. It’s obvious he knows she hates it. She doesn’t answer him.
“Oh, you do? I didn’t know you were attached.” The host looks as shocked at the turn of events as I feel.
“Mhm. She’s a wonderful woman, so loving and caring, would never hurt a fly. And she’s the love of my life.” He turns and talks right into the camera. “My best friend.”
I smile as tears blind me and run down my cheeks. How could I have been so stupid to think that Buckie would ever do anything so horrible to me. I feel awful that I completely dismissed him and never let him explain.
Stopping the video, I grab my phone and call him completely ignoring the fact that it’s two in the morning for him. It goes straight to his voicemail, so I leave a message.
“Buckie, I’m sorry. I love you. Please call me as soon as you get this. I saw what you did last night. You’re the love of my life. My best friend and I don’t want to waste any more time letting anything come between us.”
I unblock his number before throwing my phone in my bag and heading out. Locking up the back door of the club I emerge from the back alley and into the warm sunshine. For the first time in what feels like too long since this whole debacle started, I have a genuine smile on my face.
I need to see him as soon as possible. I head to the nearest Starbucks, order a coffee, and sit in a booth. Three coffees and almost six grand later, and I have flights to L.A. leaving Glasgow in the morning.
