I glance out the window.

Ula’s tending to her herb garden, plucking weeds out of the soil. There’s a slight crease on her brow, and I long to smooth it over and tell her everything’s going to be all right. If only that were true.

“Yeah, I know.”

Jesse follows my gaze. “I mean, really disappear, man. You need to leave the coast, leave the country. Or this whole thing is gonna blow up.”

I wrench my gaze away from Ula.

“I’ll be gone tonight.”

Jesse smiles. “I’ll miss you, brother, but I’m fucking glad you’re not dead.”
