“Oh, yeah.” I tried to smile, but it didn’t reach my eyes. “Kind of hard to avoid on the lake. But it felt good,” I added. “Sorry, I didn’t mean for that to come out sounding so snappy.”

Lisa set foil packs on the island and turned on the oven behind her. “Are you alright?” she asked when she turned around. “You seem off. Did something happen with Luca?”

I felt my cheeks get hot. “I’m fine,” I lied. “Just tired from being in the sun all afternoon.”

“Well, why don’t you sit down, and I’ll get this dinner made so you can have something in your stomach.”

I did as she suggested, taking a seat at the counter after she turned away my offer to help her. She always turned me down, and I still kept offering. It was strange to me to always have someone waiting on me. But tonight, I didn’t argue with her as much as I normally would have. And as much as I would love to run upstairs and wash the lake water and sex off of me, I was afraid to venture off by myself, even though I’d heard the front door close behind him and knew he wasn’t normally in the house.

Three days.

I had three days to dig up some dirt on Luca to give to Mario.
