“Then I guess it’s good she has both of us.” After a few moments, Riggs asked another question. “What do you think will happen with Rush? He’s holding back.”
“I’m hoping it’s out of respect. When he doesn’t think we’re looking he watches her closely as if she hangs the moon. I really do think he’s as taken by her as we are. You weren’t there when he met her. The look on his face. I thought he might lower to his knees beside her as if she were royalty.”
Riggs winced. “Yeah, I’m glad I wasn’t there for that one either. Might have shot Rush for daring to touch her or look at her. And I feel guilty for being so judgmental. I know none of this is his fault, but it doesn’t make it easier to stomach.”
Bray squeezed his arm. “It’s getting better though, isn’t it?”
“Yes. Especially because it’s up to Haley, and she made her position clear. I wouldn’t deny that woman anything. If she wanted me to find her an elephant and bring it to the Midwest, I’d do it.”
Bray chuckled. “Agreed. And we can’t blame her for feeling a connection with Rush. It makes sense. She’s also a kind soul. She would never hold him responsible for what happened. All we can do now is hope it’s reciprocated or things are going to get awkward in a hurry.”
Riggs nodded. “That’s exactly my fear.”
