Braylon shifted his gaze to Haley’s face, stroking her fingers with his. “Look at me, baby.”

She opened her eyes. They were filled with fear. Her lip trembled.

“I’ve got you. Just keep your eyes on mine, baby.”

She did as he asked, and seconds later, Dr. Brownville pulled her nightgown back over her thighs and eased her legs together. His voice was very soft when he spoke. “It would be best if she remained in bed for a few hours.”

She was shaking violently as Braylon eased her so that she was righted on the bed and pulled the covers up to her chin. He climbed off the bed and kissed her forehead before turning to face the doctor.

“Thank you.”

The doctor nodded. “Next time…” He took a deep breath. “If I have to come back next month, perhaps you could provide me with a sample of your choice instead.” He lifted a brow.

Braylon blew out a relieved breath. The doctor was not going to share their secrets. He nodded. “Had I known, I would have given you my own.”

The doctor’s brow furrowed.

Braylon licked his lips. “There’s nothing wrong with mine, as far as I know.”

The doctor stared at him and then nodded, knowingly. “I’ll arrange to give you your annual physical in two weeks. You can provide me with a sample then so we’ll be sure, okay?”

Braylon nodded. “I can’t thank you enough.”

“Son, you have no idea what I see in homes all over this city every day of the week. You can’t shock me. I made an oath when I got my MD, and I never break that oath. Not for anyone. Patient privacy is between me and them. No one else.” He never broke eye contact as he spoke.

“Thank you.”

“It’s my job. I’ve known you for twenty years, Braylon. You and your friends.” He lifted a brow. “You’re a good man. So are the boys you were raised with. Haley is a lucky woman.” He reached over and set his large hand on Haley’s ankle. “I’m so sorry for what you’re going through, child. You’re in good hands with Braylon. Hold on to this one, honey.”

She was trembling, but she gave him a wan smile.

The doctor finished packing up his things and headed for the door. “See you for that physical in two weeks.”

As soon as he was gone, Braylon locked the door once more and rushed to Haley’s side. He climbed onto the bed on top of the covers and hauled her into his arms.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered through the tears. “I didn’t do what you asked. I could have gotten us in trouble. I tried, but…”

He kissed her temple. “It’s okay, baby. I promise. It’s all going to be okay.”

Right?
