“Help with what?”
She shrugged. “I don’t know. Help me clear my head. Help me focus. Help me wrap my brain around whatever the hell happened between us.”
The doorbell rang, making Maya groan. “Great. A patient. Such good timing.”
“I’ll step out so you can get dressed.” Stuart turned and left the bathroom quickly. It was for the best. She didn’t need a stranger to see her coming out of the bathroom with a man.
She hurried to put her clothes on. She knew she still looked like shit, but at least she had something to focus on now. The patient at least distracted her from her meltdown.
When she opened the door, she was surprised to find a heated discussion between the doctors, Stuart, and a man she’d never seen.
“You’re sure?” Stuart was saying.
“Positive.” The man was tall and fit. He had his hands on his hips. His brows were furrowed.
“Then we have to get out of here,” Dario stated.
“As fast as possible,” the man agreed.
“What’s going on?” Maya asked as she approached.
Keanu turned toward her. “Militants are on our heels. Somehow they got wind of our existence. Franklin came to warn us.”
Maya’s eyes went wide. “Shit. We have to leave then.”
“Yes.” Dario turned back to Franklin. “How did you get here?”
“My motorcycle.”
Dario glanced at Stuart who nodded as if they had some unspoken secret exchange.
Stuart faced Franklin. “Can you take Maya with you? Get her somewhere safe?”
“Of course.” Franklin glanced at Maya.
“She’s injured,” Advic pointed out. “A laceration on her leg is still healing.”
“Wait. What?” Maya stepped closer. No way was she leaving here on the back of a motorcycle with a stranger while the people most important in her world stayed behind. Fuck no.
“I have the van. Left it a half-mile from here. I’ll go get it while you pack everything you want to take as fast as possible. When I get back, we load and get out of here,” Stuart ordered. He was already racing up the stairs before he finished. He turned around at the top and looked at Maya, pointing at her. “You leave with Franklin.”
She shook her head. “No. Not a chance.”
Dario grabbed her shoulders and looked her in the eye. “Don’t be a hero today, Maya. You’re not one hundred percent. I want you safe. I’ve known Franklin for years. I trust him with my life. I trust him with your life.”
“I’ll take her to my place. You can reconnect with her there after you load the van,” Franklin said.
“Perfect,” Dario agreed.
“No.” Maya put her foot down. “I’m staying to help.”
“We don’t have time to argue, hon,” Keanu stated. He grabbed her cheeks, kissed her soundly, and rushed toward the clinic.
Advic lifted her hand to his face and rubbed her knuckles on his cheek. “We’ll catch up with you as soon as we can.”
Dario pointed to her pack. “Get your boots on.”
Maya scowled as she grabbed the boots and dropped onto the couch to stuff her feet in and tie the laces.
