ChapterForty-Two

Ramsey

After removing the lamp shade from Cillian’s head, where it somehow ended up when he crashed into the nightstand, I pick him up from the floor and settle him back in bed. He is asleep within seconds.

I sneak out and close the door quietly, returning to Layton and David, both of whom are staring at me, waiting for a report.

“He’s fine. Pissed, but fine.”

Layton nods and turns back to David. “Do you think you can track Declan down? I’d like to get that box back to Ruby as soon as we can.”

“It’s no good,” Declan says, joining us in the kitchen. “It’s not in evidence. I don’t know where it is.”

“David says he knows,” I point out.

“If it’s not where it should be, then I can’t help with that,” he says. “It was supposed to be on the second shelf on the third rack on the left.”

“Not there,” Declan says.

“Dammit,” I mutter. “What now?”

“Fuck knows,” Declan snarls. “Where the fuck is Cillian?”

“Sleeping off a raging night out.” I point to the closed door.

He runs his hand over his face. “Great.”

“We’ll find it,” David says, but he doesn’t sound like he means it. Which basically means, we’re fucked. If he can’t find it, no one can.

“Wait,” David says suddenly. “How did you know where to find it anyway?”

“Rex asked St. Clare,” he states shortly.

Ohhh. That must be what Declan asked him when they went off for a chat last night.

“Is Ruby sleeping?” I ask.

“She’s in the shower,” David replies.

I nod and slink off into the sitting room. I pull out my phone and make a call. Waiting while it rings, eventually Layton’s mum answers it.

“Hi, Mrs. Travers, it’s Ramsey.”

“Oh, hello, love. Everything okay?”

“Yeah, I wondered if you still had my mum’s urn?” I ask with my eyes closed.

“Of course,” she says. I can almost see the smug beam on her face.

“Can I come over and collect it?”

“Anytime, dear,” she says.

“Now?”

“I’ll be here,” she says.

“Thanks.” I hang up and head straight out of the house, scooping up a set of keys on my way out. There are enough cars on this driveway that one won’t be missed.
