Ramsey appreciates my comment with a loud snicker, but Declan ignores me and stares out of the window. I guess he is getting into kill mode, or whatever it is contract killers do. Although this isn’t business. It’s personal. Has he ever killed for revenge before? There are just so many layers to this mysterious man. I look forward to unpeeling them.
“Turn here,” I murmur.
The atmosphere has become even more tense than before and it’s making me uncomfortable. I loathe awkwardness of any kind, especially silences.
My heart hammers in my chest when a phone rings again, only this time, it’s Declan’s. He glances at it, scowls and then turns it onto silent
“Problem?” I ask.
“No,” he replies shortly.
I roll my eyes. I love a mystery to solve, but he is hard fucking work sometimes. I think back to the kiss we shared and my mouth waters slightly. I wonder if that is a one-time thing only or will it happen again? Do we need to talk about it or leave it alone? I have all of these questions that have no answers, and I’m reluctant to bring them up in case I’m left disappointed. It’s better to hope, than be crushed under the rejection.
I sigh and instruct Ramsey to turn again. We have hit the warren of roads on the outskirts and now it’s time to work our way around and find Ruby before Jake hurts her. She was so stupid going into this alone. I know she doesn’t care about getting her hands dirty and she can throw a punch better than most guys, but there is no way Jake will be without his goons. She is only one woman in a pit of vipers. There is no way she will get out of this unscathed.
