“I love how he loves her. The way he makes every day special, and the newness never wears off. That’s how I remember my parents’ relationship.”

He found it odd that a woman who wanted that kind of love was willing to play second fiddle to her fiancé’s job and move away from the place where she longed to be.

She stopped walking to take in the lake in the distance. “That’s beautiful.”

He couldn’t take his eyes off her. “Sure is.”

She turned, catching him staring, but he didn’t look away. Their gazes held so long, heat coiled around them, drawing them closer. He didn’t think as he touched his fingertips to hers, whispering her name. Her lips parted with a sigh, and his heart told him to kiss her, but his head knew he shouldn’t. Caught up in a maelstrom of right and wrong, he could do little more than stare at the woman he felt like he’d waited his whole life to meet. Her phone chimed, breaking their spell, and the air rushed from her lungs. She stumbled backward, and he put his hand protectively on her lower back as she pulled her phone out of her pocket. He saw Todd’s name on the screen and knew he shouldn’t look as she read the message, but he couldn’t help it.

Sorry. I’ve been in and out of meetings all day. I’ll call you later tonight.

Disappointment rose in her eyes, but she quickly masked it with a feigned smile as she slid her phone into her pocket. “Wow, can you believe it’s already after five? Where did the time go?”

“Time flies when you’re in good company. What are you doing tonight?”

“I have a date with a bowl of cereal and the Fab Five.”

“As much as I like the Queer Eye guys, we’re breaking your date. Tonight you’re having dinner with me, the Fab One.” He guided her back the way they’d come.

“Jax, I’ve already wasted enough of your time.”

“Spending time with you is not a waste. It’s dress research. We’ll talk about it over dinner. We just have to make one stop along the way.”

“Jax…?”

“Save your breath, Jordan. One way or another, you’re mine tonight. Do I have to put on the charm?”

“As if I’d stand a chance if you did?”

You don’t stand a chance anyway.“Glad you agree.”
