And it’s none of your business.

“What did the chatty customer want?”

She glanced back to him, with her brows crinkled. “Who?”

“The solo by the window?”

Now she smiled as she managed the foam on a soda. “Oh. Trent Kane. His family owns one of the largest seafood markets in Anchorage, with satellite markets up and down the inner passage. He’s their VP of Special Projects and he’s looking at Captivity as a possibly location for a new type of business endeavor—kind of a net-to-table restaurant and market. He invited me for a sail Sunday evening.”

Trent. Of course. Trent, or Brent, or Brett or some doucher single-syllable name for the scion of a family dynasty with a bullshit title like VP of Special Projects. Jealousy flared so hot and strong he had to work to keep his hands from shaking as he drew another beer from the tap. He swallowed every sharp edge of his protest over the idea of her going for a sunset sail with Trent-fucking-Kane. “Should be a good evening for a turn around the cove. Do you need a sitter?”

He felt her eyes on him. “I told him I couldn’t.” Her exasperated tone suggested he had brain damage.

“Why?” Rather than let her answer that question, he continued, “You should go. Have fun. Mia and I can watch Shayla.” As soon as the offer left his mouth, he remembered Mia would be at Louis’ house for Sunday dinner. “I can watch her,” he corrected. He sensed her straighten, sensed her glare.

“It’s a date, Ford.” She transferred a full soda onto her tray with a bang. “He asked me on a date.” Another full soda banged onto the tray. “Are you telling me you want me to go on a date?” A third bang punctuated that question.

Fuck, no.He forced a casual shrug. “You’re young. Single. He’s young. Single. It’s supposed to be warm and clear. Good time to be out on the water.”

“Fine.” She hefted her tray to her shoulder and slayed him with fiery green eyes. “I’ll go back there and tell him I’d love to.” Pivoting, she took two steps, stopped, and glanced back. “Since I’m going to be dating, I guess it’s a good thing I got that birth control prescription from Doctor D this morning.”
