“I’m sure you do,” she smiled as reality set in. To not be concerned with anything financial? She didn’t know how she’d get used to being ‘kept’ except by doing her best with Chloe and her sisters. “What about Sam?”

“What about him?” Henri’s tone changed, became terse.

“Will you tell him about our arrangement?”

A curt shake of the head and he tried to seem ambivalent. “Absolutely not. The less he knows the better. I can’t imagine him trying to navigate the things we’ve discussed. Frankly, he shows so little interest in my life, I don’t think he’d notice any changes if I took out a billboard in Times Square.”

“He’ll come around,” she soothed, then added, “Maybe Beatrix will, too.”

“You never know. My son is curious about many things, and maybe one day he’ll become curious about himself and about me, or us. I’ll leave instructions in my will, in the event my life ends, and he can learn everything he wants.”

He sounded defeated, and she didn’t know how to make him feel any differently. “One day, he’ll wish he’d spent the time. Do you think he’s still in danger?”

“A little, I suppose. The less he knows, the better, in any case. We can keep tabs on Tourelle just as well as he can us, and I’ll look into how a bit more when I get home.”

Home. Two separate places. Her heart ached as she asked, “When will I see you again?”

Henri slipped his fingers through hers. “You may summon me whenever you like.”
