After a time, Josh slipped his arm away from me. The disappointment was immediate. I rose, and the two of us were back in our normal sitting positions, our eyes on each other.

“OK, so I think we managed to pull that off without seeming fake. That feel natural to you?”

Felt more than natural. It felt, I don’t know—right. But I kept that to myself.

“Yeah. Nothing weird about it. And I can’t speak for anyone who’d be watching, but I don’t think they’d think we were pretending.”

Were we?

“Right. And are you still on the fence about this after that?”

“What about kissing?” The words tumbled out of my mouth as if I’d had no control over them. It took all the restraint I had not to clasp my hands over my lips.

But Josh wasn’t put off in the slightest. If anything, he appeared to think it was a point worth making.

“Yeah, we’re going to have to do that—a lot of it. Both of us are going to have to look thrilled as hell every single time. After all, we’re in love and only recently got engaged, right? We’re going to have to look like two high schoolers who can’t get enough of each other.”

The silliest thought popped into my mind—what if we’d dated in high school? How different would things had been if the two of us hadn’t been in some stupid teasing game, if Josh or I had actually acted on our mutual crush? No point in thinking about it, really.

Again Josh appeared thoughtful. “OK, we need to try it. I mean, not like we haven’t done it before, but that was more of a heat-of-the-moment kind of thing.”

Indeed it had been. Very heated.

He went on. “So. We need to work on looking natural. Like, the kind of kiss you do when you’re in love with someone, not when you’re three drinks in and trying to rip their clothes off in the back of your car.”

“You were trying to rip my clothes off?”

He grinned. “Took a lot of restraint not to. Anyway, if we’re going to do this, we ought to try it.”

My pussy tingled with anticipation. My brain screamed out “Bad idea, bad idea!” but I didn’t care.

“OK. Let’s start by looking into each other’s eyes.”

“Aren’t we already doing that?”

“Sure, but we need to really look into each other’s eyes. Not like we’re only having a conversation, but like we’re totally mesmerized by each other, like we’re looking into each other’s eyes and not only seeing the love we have for each other, but almost like we can see our future together, like we’re imagining the house we’re going to have, the kids playing in the front yard, all of that.”

“Damn, you’re really painting a hell of a picture here.”

“Call me a method actor.” Another grin. “But the point stands—we have to kiss and mean it. Or, at least, pretend to mean it.”

I was game. “OK. Let’s do it. We look into each other’s eyes.”

“Right.”

We turned our bodies toward each other, and I locked my gaze onto his. Josh’s eyes were beautiful, no doubt about that. Dark, green flecked with bits of gold, thick eyelashes but dark slender perfectly shaped eyebrows over top of them. And that hint of playfulness. We’d made eye contact, sure, but never like that before. My heart rate picked up, my pussy clenched.

“You have beautiful eyes, you know.”

I smiled. “Same to you.”

“But I already knew that. Knew it the first time I saw them.”

Damn. Was this more acting? Either way I loved it, even though I knew I shouldn’t.

“You know, I heard somewhere once that all you need to do to really fall in love with someone is to look into their eyes for long enough.”

“And do you believe that?”

“I’ve heard crazier things. And I guess we’re about to find out.”

I had to ask. “Method acting?”

“Method acting.”

Without thinking, I licked my lips before biting down onto the lower one again.

After several long, heated moments, Josh finally spoke. “OK. We should do this.”

“Kiss?”

“Kiss.”

“For the lie.”

“For the lie.”

Josh reached toward me, taking my chin into his hand. Then he brought his face toward mine slowly.

“Wait—is this a, um, tongue kiss?”

Another smile. “Don’t kill the moment.”

Were we having a moment? What was going on between us?

Then our lips touched.

It was a moment, all right. One to remember.

Chapter 17

CASSIDY

To say I “fell into” his kiss would be the understatement of the year. We poured into each other, our lips crackling with electricity and passion. His hand moved from my chin to the back of my head, his fingers running through my hair.

I breathed in softly as we kissed, my skin tingling and my nipples turning hard. The moments passed by, and though I knew I needed to tell him this was enough practice for one day, the more I wanted to let the kiss go on and on and on.
