“How do you know it’s not from your mother?”
“Are you really asking how I know I didn’t get my big cock from my mother?”
I rubbed my forehead. “I think I’m concussed.”
“Or desperately in need of a good fuck.”
Yep, blushing again. “If you only knew the half,” I said under my breath as I reached for my seatbelt.
“You’re driving, remember?” His hand closed around mine on the belt buckle and squeezed.
I shut my eyes and let myself pretend this was real life. Us joking around and getting naked and not hating each other.
It was real, at least for this moment. And it felt pretty damn good.
I squeezed his fingers back and opened my door. I jumped down like I normally would’ve, and my legs actually folded under me.
Oz leaned across his seat and peered down at me, his brows knitted together. “What the fuck?”
That was probably the best way to sum up this whole night.
From where I was kneeling on the cold ground, I clutched the door handle and laughed.
Five
Daisy slept for the rest of the trip up north.
After she’d collapsed to the pavement—why I still wasn’t sure, although my ego enjoyed thinking it was due to the orgasm I’d given her—I’d decided the passenger seat was the best place for her. She hadn’t argued. Nor had she tried to kill us or bewitch me or any other of her little tricks.
Mercifully, she’d just dozed. She let out these little snuffling snores now and then that shouldn’t have made me grin but did just the same.
I even followed the damn map to a T and didn’t make any wrong turns.
Just when I thought I was going to have to wake her up, she lifted her head and fumbled out for the dash. “Is it time to get up?”
“Unless you want me to drag you in by the hair, yep.”
In truth, I’d planned on carrying her. It wasn’t as if she was heavy. I’d had her on top of me—fuck, I couldn’t start thinking about that or the pike in my jeans was sure to return—and she’d barely weighed anything. If it hadn’t been for these seats not being built for a guy my size, I could’ve held her forever.
Something I had no intention of analyzing, now or ever.
She rubbed her eyes and let out a moan as she straightened her back. “Ouch. Think I’m broken. Thank God you have a cushy place, because I need a fancy shower. The one at Ever’s place sucks. The hot water tank is like the size of a thimble and—” She broke off as I continued up the winding drive that was surrounded by trees and more trees. “Oh, nice and secluded. That’s good.”
I tried not to smirk. Truly, I did. “There is a shower.”
“With lots of hot water. Lots and lots. And I hope there’s a big bed. Or two,” she added hastily. “Not saying we’d share a bed, but if there’s only one, then I can…” She trailed off and braced her hands on the dashboard as the truck rumbled over the ruts in the earth. “Where the hell are we going?”
“To my humble abode, of course.” There was no hiding my smirk now as we finally reached the crest of the road and came into a clearing that ended with my cabin. “Your waterfront awaits.” I gestured broadly to my left, indicating the expanse of lake that was just a rippling blur in the darkness.
Daisy wrenched open the door and jumped out, managing to keep upright this time. She slammed the door and ran toward the cabin, ascending the three steps that led to the wraparound porch. That was pretty much the biggest amenity it boasted.
She propped her hands on her hips as she studied the broken sign leaning against one side of the porch proclaiming the property was Fisher’s Rest, then turned toward where I was pulling the car into the slip.
The second I opened the door, she shouted, “You’re an asshole.”
I hadn’t laughed so hard since… Damn, I had no idea.
Yes, I did. I hadn’t laughed that hard since my sister and my mom had been alive. Back when I’d still had hope.
