“Against me,” Donovan said. “In case you were wondering, the attack is personal. We haven’t isolated it yet. We’re working on it, pulling threads—”
“Who’s working on it?” Cooper demanded. “Roth? Noah? Because correct me if I’m wrong, they’
ve been handling this from the beginning, and look where we are.”
“We’re bringing in additional security support, but we have full faith Aidan Roth and his team will figure out who is responsible. That includes Noah. He remains in charge of the security force and will be bringing on more members of his team. Quinn Alexander, for one, which some of you may know as Faith from Hammered’s husband. Keys,” she said when Teagan frowned. She was still the new kid.
“Oh, right. Gotcha.”
“Because Sean is on Daisy’s detail, since she has been directly targeted—”
“What?” The word burst out of me.
“We have to assume it because of what occurred at your cabin,” Lila said gently. “Most likely, the target was you because you’re a member of this band. But just in case.”
I nodded, but I didn’t fucking like it. Not one bit.
“Noah will be shifting to Teagan, due to the situation in her past. We can’t take any chances right now.” Lila looked at Teagan, who dropped her gaze to her hands. “Your ex probably doesn’t have anything to do with this, but we just don’t know. Anyone could be involved.”
“Her ex?” Lindsey frowned. “What are you talking about? When she joined this band, we asked her if she had anything we had to worry about in her past. You said you didn’t.”
Teagan didn’t answer.
“Elle vouched for you,” Jamie put in. “Did she lie for you too?” She slammed a hand on the table, shaking it. “Fuck. As if we need this shit.”
“I’ve got Teagan,” Cooper said evenly from my side. “She doesn’t need Noah. I was in the same fucking unit as he was. Had the same training.”
“We don’t have time for pissing matches. Cooper, Noah has had additional security training you have not. Not to mention three little words called conflict of interest. You also have your own detail.”
Cooper stood and walked out of the room, the door slapping shut in his wake.
Teagan still hadn’t lifted her head. It was the quietest I’d ever seen her.
Guess our bubbly Teagan had some secrets. Then again, who the fuck didn’t?
“We were going to cancel the tour.”
“No. Absolutely not.” Lindsey’s voice shot out like a whip. “We have so many dates left. We have so many people on our team to think of. We can’t just leave them in the lurch without a job with no warning.” She pulled her hair band off her wrist and yanked her hair back severely from her face. “They won’t send us running like cowards.”
“Retreat isn’t always cowardly.” Donovan crossed his arms. “Sometimes it’s the smartest thing you can do to regroup.”
“We don’t need to regroup. We’re doing fucking fine. Our numbers are in the stratosphere. There’s absolutely no reason—”
“You might want to think how you’d feel if you lost one of those members of your team you’re so worried about, Miss York,” Donovan said evenly. “It’s happened before. We’re going to make damn certain it doesn’t happen again. Even if that means making hard choices.”
Lindsey pressed her lips together until they were white. “No. Not yet. Surround us with security. Lock us in our homes. I don’t care. But we can’t cancel the tour. Not yet.”
Lila nodded. “I’m inclined to agree. Oblivion will be going on tour again soon, so that means we’ll have two major tours to cover at one time. Two members of my family will be on the road at once, along with my best friend. Margo has a new baby.”
None of us spoke.
“Never mind all of you. You’re my family too.” Her gaze touched each of us in turn. “Every one of you.”
“We love you too,” Jamie said, causing more than one head to whip in her direction. She shrugged. “I can have feelings too.”
“For a while, life is going to get harder. Things will change. But we will get through this. All of us working together.” She paused. “You’re all in agreement about remaining on the tour?”
One by one, we each nodded. Not knowing what we were risking by just doing our jobs.
