They checked in and then walked to the elevators.
She stepped inside and faced him. He stood before her, still somber over what she had said earlier. She wondered if he was pondering having a baby with her.
“The more time I spend with you and Evie, the more that seems like a possibility,” he said.
“The more you feel you can?” she asked.
After a few seconds, he nodded. “Yes.”
She met his heated gaze and stepped toward him. Deliberately avoiding thinking about what would happen when the case was solved, she put her hands on his face and kissed him.
She didn’t mean for it to turn into a firestorm, but the instant their lips touched, passion flared and they kissed fervently. That made her glad she had gone on the Pill.
The elevator doors opened and that broke them apart.
Hazel saw an elderly couple waiting on the floor outside. They looked shocked.
Callum took Hazel’s hand and led her down the hall to their door.
As he swiped the keycard to their room, she moved in front of him, not able to wait. She put her hands on his face again and kissed him. His hands flattened on her lower back and he pulled her against him.
Pushing the door open, he walked forward and she backward into the room, bumping into the door as it swung closed.
Hazel began to unbutton his blue shirt, spreading the material aside to put her hands on his bare chest. He pulled up her blouse and she moved back to lift
her arms. He tossed that to the floor and removed his shirt. Then he unclasped her bra and she sent that to the floor as well.
Callum cupped her breasts. “I will never get tired of looking at these.”
She liked the sound of that. Never. That implied a future.
He returned to kissing her, caressing her nipples as he did.
She ran her hands over his muscular chest and abdomen, then around to his back and up to his shoulders.
Callum lifted her and stepped to the bed, letting her down. He unbuttoned her jeans and she pushed them off her legs, along with her underwear, while he got out of his.
Both of them naked, he crawled on top of her. She wrapped her arms around him as he resumed kissing her.
Hazel lost herself in the feel of her hands on his skin, roaming down his back to his rear. Ending the kiss, he just looked down at her. The wonder of all this entranced her, too.
At last he kissed her again, and she opened her legs as he sought to enter her. For long, slow moments they moved together. Each gentle penetration stirred her senses higher and higher, until they both climaxed at the same time.
Afterward, he pulled her beside him and held her, kissing her forehead.
“What the hell is happening with us?” he asked softly. Although he swore, he sounded bewildered.
“I don’t know.”
She didn’t admit aloud that this could be the makings of true love, and she sensed him doing the same.
Chapter 10
Callum stepped into the lobby of the Dales Inn, holding Hazel’s hand. He had taken it after they left the car, ignoring the realization that the action had been automatic, driven by his affection for her and the passionate night they had shared. He also didn’t want to hurt her by abruptly letting go.
The reception desk was busy. It was close to checkout time, and people rolled luggage toward the exit and away from the reception desk. People’s voices mixed with a ringing telephone. A lone man walked toward the exit with no luggage. Something about him looked familiar. He had on sunglasses and a Stetson. Wrangler jeans and cowboy boots completed the cowboy ensemble.
The man looked at Callum and both of their steps slowed.
