“I’ve been busy. And you’re busy too. You’re a dad?” She smiled, and I had the most curious urge to kiss her.

“I am.”

“Mollie is great. Have you met her?” Rick asked.

Ellie shook her head. “No. My condo overlooks the pool, so I’ve seen them there together.” She turned to me. “Does your place overlook the beach?”

“Yes.”

The waiter brought our drinks, but we weren’t ready to order dinner yet.

“You work at home, don’t you Will?” Angela asked. “Are you a drug dealer?”

Ellie choked on her drink and I reached over to pat her back, which was bare and warm.

“Baby, I told you, he’s a writer,” Rick rolled his eyes.

I couldn’t help but wonder if the drug dealer idea came from Ellie. Lots of people worked from home, but for many, it was still a foreign idea and often more associated with moms. She probably wondered how a twenty-something man with a place overlooking the beach could afford it. Although, what kind of dad would be a drug dealer?

“What do you write?” Ellie pulled herself together. Even so, I left my arm on the back of her chair, gently touching her back.

“Marketing copy mostly. Sales letters, PR pieces, stuff like that.”

“Does it pay well?” Angela asked. That seemed like a question probing if I could afford to take care of her friend, which was like pouring cold water on the attraction I was feeling. Would I like to fuck Ellie? Yes. But I wasn’t going to marry her.

I took my hand away from Ellie’s back and used it to pick up my drink. “It pays well enough for me and Mollie.”

“How about we order dinner?” Rick asked.

The meal was pleasant, but frustrating too. Ellie was turning out not just to be beautiful and sexy, but smart and funny too. It was getting difficult to keep reminding myself that I couldn’t afford to touch her.

“How about a walk on the beach?” Rick asked after we’d paid the bill for dinner.

“I’d love that.” Angela gazed up at Rick and I wondered if he knew or cared that this woman was one-hundred percent in love with him. Did he feel the same? I’d have to warn him about the perils of giving his heart to a woman.

“How about you two?” Rick put his arm around Angela.

I looked at Ellie. “A walk?”

She nodded. “It’s a pretty night for it.”

We headed to the beach and started walking together, but it wasn’t long before Rick and Angela had fallen behind.

“They should get a room.” Ellie looked back to where Angela and Rick were kissing like maniacs, his hand squeezing her ass as she ground her pelvis against his. She turned to me. “He seems nice.”

I understood that she was needing reassurance that Rick wouldn’t hurt her friend. I nodded. “He is.”

She started walking again, and I joined her, keeping in step.

Finally, she said, “Thank you for agreeing to go on this date. It’s embarrassing to have to be set up, but I’m glad it was you.”

“I’ve enjoyed the night. I’m not sure why you have to be set up though.”

She stopped at looked at me with scrutinizing eyes.

“What?”

“I’m trying to decide if you’re being sincere.”

I shook my head. “Of course, I am. Why wouldn’t I be?”

She looked down and then out over the water. The light wind blew her dark hair away from her face, showing off those lovely eyes and full lips.

When I realized she hadn’t answered, I asked again. “Why do you think I’d be insincere?”

She gave a soft laugh. “I’m not a woman men gravitate to.”

“Bullshit.”

She jerked and looked at me.

“I’m a man, and I’m gravitating to you.” I shouldn’t have said that, but I couldn’t understand how she’d think she wasn’t appealing to men.

She smirked and turned back to the water. “I’ve been your neighbor for nearly two weeks and you haven’t noticed.”

“Bullshit again. I did notice. I told you so when we were introduced tonight.” If only she knew how much I noticed and how much cum I’d had to wash off my shower wall after fantasizing about her.

“You know what I mean.”

I took a breath and joined her in looking over the water. There was something about the ocean that was lulling and quieting. I couldn’t blame my daughter for wanting to be a mermaid when she grew up.

As I watched the waves lap at the shore, I knew I should keep the thoughts I was having about Ellie to myself. After all, I couldn’t get involved with this woman, even as my body begged to know her.

“I’m sure Angela told you about my…situation.”

“Huh?” I was reminded how little I understood about women and the way they talked in code.

“That I’ve never…you know…”

“I don’t know.” What the hell was she talking about?

“Been with a man.”

My brain exploded with colliding thoughts. First, there was no way a man had never touched her. What was wrong with the men in Illinois? And then my brain joined my body thinking how fine and tight fucking a virgin would be. Finally, I thought about how I really couldn’t touch her because a woman who waited this long to have sex must be saving herself for someone important, and that would never, ever be me.
