“Mom,” I said, interrupting her reverie. “I… There’s something we needed to tell you.”

My mom turned to look at us with a weary look on her face. She sighed and looked between the two of us. “I think I have an idea of what you’re going to say…” she began.

My eyes darted toward Spencer’s and I saw the worry I felt mirrored there. At least, I wasn’t facing this alone.

“You two haven’t been as secret as you think you have,” she continued with a laugh. “I’ve seen the longing looks between you and those stolen touches when you think I’m not looking. You two are together, aren’t you?”

Before I could reply, Spencer was already gripping my hand tight and nodding. “Yes, we are, Robin,” he told her. “The first thing you need to know is that I never intended to go after your daughter. We actually met before, back when Rylee was living in Boise.”

My mom’s face changed to a look of shock then. “What? Really?” she questioned.

Spencer nodded. “You see, I first met Rylee when she was working in a coffee shop in Boise that was just around the corner from where I lived. We saw each other a few times in the evening over a few months. I obviously thought she was beautiful, but I never expected her to have any interest in me, but then… Well, one thing led to another and…”

“What do you mean?” my mom asked, surprised.

“The thing is, Mom,” I began, wanting to clear up everything. “I slept with Spencer back in Boise. Just afterward, he got called away to Chicago on business and when he returned, I’d already moved back here to Halston because… Well, Spencer is the guy I met while I was at college… Spencer is the one who knocked me up, Mom. He’s Jayden’s dad.”

“What?!” Mom cried, leaning back in her chair and looking shocked.

“I didn’t know she was your daughter until I came back to Halston,” Spencer confessed.

“And… And I didn’t ever expect to see him again! I didn’t even know his last name, in all honesty,” I admitted. “That’s why I was always so vague when we talked about Jayden’s father.”

There was a beat of silence between us all and I shot a look at Spencer nervously. Spencer shrugged his shoulders. I looked back at my mom and she still looked overwhelmed by everything we’d told her.

“Mom, please talk to me,” I said, feeling worried. “How do you really feel about all this?”

My mom sighed. “It’s a lot to process,” she finally said as she looked down at her lap and shook her head from left to right. “But the explanation makes sense and I understand.”

I couldn’t help it. I was grinning from ear to ear then. “Really? You mean it?” I queried.

Mom nodded. “Love doesn’t always appear where we expect it to. There isn’t always an ideal way for things to work out and sometimes, second chances or even age gaps result in the most successful relationships.” She paused and shrugged. “I’m glad that you two have one another and more than anything, I’m really happy that Jayden will finally have his father in his life.”

I was overwhelmed with joy at her response. “Mom! I can’t believe it!” I lunged forward and hugged her tight. “I can’t believe I have such a cool, understanding Mom!”

Robin chuckled. “Yeah, you’re pretty lucky,” she agreed.

After much discussions between the three of us about our future, Friday soon became Saturday and I couldn’t believe our week in Hawaii was almost over. It was our last night in this beautiful paradise and as I looked out over the white sand the water gushing onto the shore, I knew I never wanted to leave. That was when I decided to look into buying my own villa in Hawaii. Even if Rylee and Jayden didn’t want to move here, we could still use it for vacations. After all, watching Jayden enjoy the beach and the sea was one of the most wonderful experiences I’d ever had and I wanted to repeat it as often as possible.

I was looking forward to spending more and more days exactly like this in the future. Rylee and Jayden were all I was thinking about and I couldn’t help but be excited for the future of my new little family.

Robin walked past me to go sit outside on the veranda and I smiled at her. “Are you still okay to watch Jayden for us tonight?” I asked.

“Of course, Spencer,” she replied with a wide grin. “Still planning a surprise for Rylee?”

I nodded.

“Will you tell me what it is?” she probed with a conspiratorial smile.

I mocked zipping my lips closed and smile.

“Okay, okay,” she responded with a wave of her hands. “Well, whatever it is. Good luck.”

“Thank you, Robin.”

I leaned in to press a friendly kiss to her cheek before heading back inside the house. Rylee was sat at the breakfast bar sifting through the pages of the novel she was reading. I smiled as I watched her.
