“You don’t act like an ailing aunt.” Cheeks burning, Kitt turned her back while she buttered her aunt’s toast and got out the honey pot. She shouldn’t even think about having sex with Rob because once she’d had his penis inside her, she instinctively knew she’d become obsessed with wanting him to fuck her. Feeling his hot, hard cock inside her would immediately become addictive and she’d never want to leave town again. But she had a job to return to in Orlando after she’d solved her first case. She had this one chance to become a detective and spend her life fighting crime.

Besides, Rob wasn’t likely to stay put for long. She set down Auntie’s food and refilled her cup.

Sug nodded her thanks. “You can go ahead and smile and look all dreamy now. You always were crazy about that Harrison boy. Nice he showed up, although he is a handful.”

He was also handy with his fingers and toes. Smothering a smile, Kitt poured herself a bowl of cereal and sat down on the other side of the table. “How do you suppose he happened to show up the day after I got here?”

“You know how this town is. Everybody knows everything. Nosy Jonesy next door could have blabbed the news.”

So she did still live there. “Since she rarely goes out, how probable is it she had an opportunity to talk to Rob? It’s more likely that you saw him somewhere and told him you were expecting me.” Kitt leant forward and gave Auntie the evil eye. “Isn’t that what happened?”

“Aha. You got back up to see him after pretending to go to bed, and he ratted me out. I expected as much. How was it?” Sug gave Kitt a broad wink.

Kitt’s cheeks grew warm but she refused to give in to embarrassment. She wasn’t the one in the hot seat. “Don’t aha me. Nothing happened. Own up.”

“Have you forgotten? I didn’t know you were coming.”

“Yes, you did. You knew as soon as you told my father that you were very ill, I’d be here right away.”

“Okay, so you got me. It was underhanded of me but I wanted you here, Kitt. I miss you but since you have a job and a boyfriend, it would have been presumptuous to ask that you drop everything to spend time with me. However, if you made the decision on your own…” She shrugged. “You’re like the daughter I never had and after I ran into Rob downtown and he asked about you, I thought it would be good for everybody if you showed up.

“School is out for the summer and you have time off, plus you should be glad to get away from that Lionel

guy.” Sug turned up her nose. “Plus, I’ll bet your job is as exciting as picking lint off a black dress.”

“I…have to admit that working as a school librarian isn’t much fun. I know…you never thought it would be, and you were right.”

“You shouldn’t have listened to your dad, but you always did. You’re too good, Kitt. You need more spirit.” Sug beamed and clapped her hands. “And I have a plan. Stay here with me for a couple of months while I get my health back.” She coughed a little and held her chest. “Meanwhile, shop around and find a job you’ll like here. I’d feel so much better if you were close.”

This wasn’t the time to tell Sug she was already considering another job and it wasn’t in Summerville.

“I’m sure we can find you a man here that’s better the one you’ve got,” Sug went on. “One that will actually make you happy. You’re not in love, I betcha. Lionel probably wears white socks and looks like a sissy next to Rob Harrison.”

Kitt chuckled. Her aunt was so predictable. “It wouldn’t matter if Lionel were a body builder and a nudist. You’ve always been in Rob’s corner. Nothing’s changed.”

Sug fiddled with her spoon, moving it around on the tablecloth, lining it up with the stripes. A faraway look crossed her face and Kitt knew she was remembering their trip to the doctor to get Kitt a prescription for birth control pills and to a pharmacy in the next town to get it filled. She didn’t even ask Kitt if she needed them. Sug just told her they were going.

“You were a nervy old broad,” Kitt said.

Sug chuckled and patted her hand. “Your mama was so oblivious to the urges of a teenage girl, she might as well have come over on the Mayflower. You had a mighty strong crush and I wanted to keep you safe.”

The embarrassing part was that she took the pills and never needed them. Auntie would be disappointed if she knew, so Kitt never told her.

“He sure looks good, even without a hair on his head. And I kind of like the flash of that gold-tipped tooth every time he grins.”

“He could make wooden teeth like George Washington’s look appealing,” Kitt said, sighing. There was no denying Rob’s good looks. “So did you suggest he come by to see me?”

“Nope. After I first ran into him at Fresh Market, he stopped by the house to visit and I didn’t think it was my beauty and sparkling conversation that brought him knocking at my door. So, I told him what he wanted to hear.” She chuckled and patted Kitt’s hand across the table. “That you weren’t married, you live in Orlando, and you’d be here soon, so he might want to keep an eye out for your car.”

“Rob came to the house to visit you? I am surprised at that. Did he actually ask about me?”

“Ah, ha. You do still care.” Sug said smugly. “Yes, he brought up your name first at the supermarket and again when he came here.”

Kitt stuck out her tongue to keep from breaking into a smile. Interesting. She wanted to ask for details of the conversation but didn’t want to give Auntie the satisfaction. And she needed to know more about what her aunt was facing. “It’s time to talk about more important things now. Tell me about your health issues.”

Sug shrugged. “Not much to tell. I’ve been feeling poorly for some time and I finally saw a doctor and he wanted to run some tests. The verdict isn’t in yet.”

Verdict. So it was something bad. “Mom said I should come at once …” Kitt choked up and swiped at her eyes. “She insinuated it was life-thr—“
