“Which one of you niggas gonna tell me what the fuck you at my door for?” he said harshly.
“I came looking for the father of Lawrynn. Her mother’s name is—” Murder was trying to finish his sentence but was cut off by the man.
“Laura is her mother’s name. Is Lawrynn okay?” he asked.
“It’s hard to explain. If we could step in, I’ll explain everything to you,” Murder said.
“Which one of y’all niggas are in love with my daughter? Being that his ass looks just as old as I am, you better say it’s your ass or we all gonna die on this porch today,” he said, looking at Murder.
“Nah, he’s my uncle, and I’m the one in love with your daughter,” Murder answered.
“Good answer,” he said as he opened the front door wider so they could both make their way in. He looked Murder up and down as he walked past him. Murder could feel him looking at him, but he had a reason for coming to this man’s house, so he needed to focus on that. “Have a seat. Do either of you want a beer or something?” he asked.
“Nah, we good,” Murder answered.
“Okay, so get to the point. What’s going on with Lawrynn?” he asked Murder and Uncle Jimmy.
“She was attacked by her cousin with some kind of cleaner that she found at the mall. She lost her sight temporarily. However, her mama, Laura, has been acting strange ever since it happened. Her cousin was arrested, but Laura got Lawrynn’s brothers to bail her out of jail. She’s been checking on her more than she checks or even asks about Lawrynn,” Murder told him.
“Why would Nell h
urt Lawrynn like that? From what I understand, they’re close like sisters. Something else has got to be going on,” Lawrynn’s father said.
“Your name is Kelvin, right?” Uncle Jimmy asked as he scooted to the edge of the sofa.
“Yeah, but you already knew that, right?” Kelvin answered.
“Nell isn’t the cousin that did that to Lawrynn, it was Nikki, Letitica’s daughter,” Uncle Jimmy said.
“Letitica doesn’t have any kids that I know of, especially not any kids around Lawrynn and Nell’s age. As far I know, she can’t even have kids,” Kelvin said, looking at the two men in his living room like they were speaking a foreign language. “Maybe y’all should start from the beginning because some shit ain’t sounding right,” he said and took his freshly opened beer to the head.
Kelvin sat back and listened to what the two had to say, and he couldn’t believe the shit that they were telling him. By the time they finished talking, Kelvin had gotten tired of going to the fridge for another beer and just took the twelve pack and put it on the table in front of him.
“Just out of curiosity, why did you leave and never come back?” Murder asked.
“Laura and I were supposed to be the shit as far as couples in the hood go. Everyone knew who we belonged to. She had just as many niggas trying their hands with her as I had women throwing the pussy at me. I never folded and always remained faithful. Laura, on the other hand, started messing around with this guy named Polo behind my back. I don’t know how long they were messing around, but by the time I found out, she had just had what I thought was our second daughter, Lanisha.
“After finding out about her and Polo, I took both of the girls to get DNA tests done. She was pissed that I took things that far. Being a man, I couldn’t live without knowing if the girls were really mine or not. That was the worst two weeks of my damn life. Laura was slamming cabinets and shit around the house. She was pissed with me like I was the one who cheated. I know if I would’ve come home with an outside baby, she would’ve killed my ass sure enough. Anyway, when the test was done, I found out that Lawrynn was mine but Lanisha wasn’t,” Kelvin said.
Murder and Jimmy both were boiling on the inside. Laura was turning out to be the snake they thought she was.
“Where is the other child? You’re saying she had a baby after Lawrynn, but the only other children Lawrynn knows about are her brothers. She’s the only girl as far as she knows,” Murder said, anxious for the pieces to fall into place.
“I told her we couldn’t be together anymore because I wasn’t raising another man’s child. I left, but I had to come back for some of my things. The day I came back, she had cooked this big ass meal. I thought she was about to have company or something. Come to find out, she had done all that for me. She was hoping that I would come back to be with her.
After I tried to find out what the hell she’d been smoking, she told me that she gave the baby to its father. I laid her ass out because she basically gave a damn baby away just to keep me. She wasn’t worried about keeping me when she was fucking the shit out of Polo,” Kelvin said and paused to take two more drinks of beer and shake his head.
“We argued some more then I left. I stayed in contact with La-La over the years, and that’s how I knew what was going on with Lawrynn. She sent me some pictures here and there. I have an account set up for when she came to find me. I could’ve just came back to Virginia and forced Laura’s hand, but she was always a sneaky, slimy bitch. So, to keep the drama down, I stayed away,” Kelvin said.
“You said Letitica can’t have kids. How do you know that?” Murder asked.
“Letitica and Laura were close as fuck back then. Laura had Letitica wrapped around her finger. She would do anything for Laura no matter what it was. One time, Laura had got into some shit with some females who stayed down the street, and she boosted Letitica up to go down there and fight the damn girl. She sent her down there to get beat damn near to death.
“Come to find out, Letitica ended up being jumped by at least five bitches. During the beating, Letitica said that the girls were stomping her head and stomach. The doctor came in and told us that the damage to her stomach had caused her uterus to shift. The motherfucker said it was the first time he had ever seen the shit happen. Talking about she must have been hit with the same amount of force as a speeding minivan. Laura never apologized or had one fucking word of sympathy. I should’ve known then that Laura was definitely a mentally challenged mother fucker,” Kelvin said.
“I’m gonna marry your daughter. In fact, I plan on proposing to her in a few days. I want you to be there. We also have to find out where this Lanisha person is. I know if Lawrynn has a sister out there, she would love to meet her,” Murder said.
Kelvin sat back and thought about if he should go back and expose Laura to everyone. Deep inside, he was still hurt about the second child not being his. He didn’t hate Laura, but he damn sure didn’t like her.
