“What is your game plan for the day?”
“I never did hire an assistant. With the baby coming, I am going to need one,” I say without thinking.
“Baby? Congratulations man. That is good news.”
“I know. We just found out. So please don’t say anything yet.”
“Sure. No problem. I’ll leave you to it.”
“See ya later and good luck.”
“Yeah, I might need it. I should have done this months ago, when I first got here.” I nod understandingly.
Cable goes off in the opposite direction and I head for the barn. My office is in the converted loft space upstairs. Once there, I pull up the resumes that have been sent to me in response to my ad. No one has any ranching or farming experience and that makes this decision even harder. I am not sure how long I am out there, when Lorelei walks in.
“Ella said you didn’t come in for lunch. It’s dinner time now,” she says hands on her hips.
“You out of school already Kitten?” I ask glancing at the clock on the wall above her head.
“Yeah, for a few hours now.”
“Come here.” I demand gruffly. “I haven’t felt your lips all day.”
She walks over to my desk and I push my chair back a little. She plops down in my lap.
“I made an appointment for Friday after school.”
“Very good. I will be joining you,” I say breathing in her scent.
“I thought so,” she says squirming in my lap. “What are you doing out here?”
“Looking for an assistant.” She frowns.
“What?” I ask. I don’t like that look on her face.
“I don’t like the idea of another woman catering to your needs.” I chuckle. “Don’t laugh at me. I am serious,” she says and from the look on her face, I believe her.
“I could hire a man,” I say quickly. Knowing her like I do, I am pretty sure I already know where this going.
“I don’t like the idea of some man catering to your needs either. Let me do it. It’s my job anyways. I’ll be the best assistant you’ve ever had, I promise.” There it is. My possessive little Kitten.
“Sold,” I say bringing my lips down to hers.I love the fact that her little jealous ass wants to work with me. I am one thousand percent certain, I’d do the same damn thing if the roles were reversed.
I kiss her with everything in me, until her tummy growls.
“I believe my baby is hungry,” I say letting her stand.
“He or she really is.”
“Let’s go eat. I will devour you later.”
“I can’t wait,” she says giggling as she takes off across the barn and out into the yard. “Aren’t you going to chase me?” she asks.
“Always,” I say taking off after her.
I will always chase her, love her, and support her. She is my end and my beginning. Without her, I know I wouldn’t be as happy as I am right now.
Nothing is more important than her and the family we are creating.
