The biggest change that had happened was the relationship between Kalilah’s parents. Kalilah’s dad had moved out of their family estate, and no one knew the reason. Neither of his in-laws spoke about what caused the rift between them, and Finn wondered again what could have driven the couple apart.
But none of that truly mattered to him, not when he could see his wife, content and happy, and his two children – soon three – healthy balls of energy bouncing all over the place. He was so happy; they were so happy that not even the past could taint it. Not when they had the rest of their lives to look forward to. Choosing not to dwell on the sadness the past held, but rather linger in the joyful moment, he hurried after his wife and entered Kaiya’s dance school to a rather wonderful sight of what he could only attest to be growth.
“Finn!” Jalissa waved at Finn and invited him over to the group who had arrived before them.
Kaiya came over with a warm hug for Finn, while Katherine kissed her grandchildren, who were happy to see her. Kaiya then hoisted up the twins on each of her hips and headed to the back room of the dance studio.
“Katherine, I didn’t expect to see you here,” Finn said as he placed a kiss on each of her cheeks.
“I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to see my grandchildren perform in their first talent show,” Kalilah’s mother replied.
The entrance door swung open to reveal his mom and siblings. He went over to greet his mom and siblings. They had come from Ottawa just to see the twins’ dance performance and he was glad for it.
“I hope we’re not late,” said his mom.
“No, you’re not, Mom, we only just got here ourselves.”
Kalilah came over to greet his parents, and his mom placed her hand over Kalilah’s stomach.
“Where are my munchkins?” his sister asked.
“Yes, where are my babies?” his mom asked.
“They’re in the back with Kaiya,” he replied. He could see his younger brother eyeing Jalissa, and he gave him a cool look. Justin only winked at him and made his way over to where Jalissa stood. Before he could intervene, the entrance door swung open again, prompting Finn to take note of a rather awkward stare from his wife, Katherine, and Jalissa towards the door.
“Can I speak to Kaiya Anderson?” A masculine voice spoke from behind Finn.
Jalissa and Katherine both looked stricken. Something in Katherine’s eyes held something more; fear, maybe shame Finn surmised. Their reaction prompted Finn to turn around and look from the man and back to them and then back again.
“Tyler? What the hell are you doing here?” Finn heard Jalissa ask, anger evident in her voice.
Something about the man made the women nervous, and he could only wonder what exactly it was about his new partner that had them on edge. Something was amiss, and Finn seemed to be the only one who wasn’t in the loop.
