He groans. “When we find your sister, I’m going to strangle her first.”
“Deal,” I agree.
The drive back to Houston is roughly two hours and some change. I try to call Khrystina’s phone several time but it goes to voicemail immediately. We arrive to the ranch with all of Niki’s brothers looking around worried and the guard I met a month ago there.
I put on my game face and know I need to come up with a plan to find my sister. I’ll tell her everything when I do.
I’ll tell her about our father and how horrible he was.
I’ll tell her about how he was truly a monster.
CHAPTER22
Niki
Days later…
The bank manager of Houston First National Bank is short and balding. As I follow behind him, my eyes trace the balding pattern on his head. Absent mindedly, I rub at my own head full of hair. That was one thing I’d gotten from my bastard of a father, thick hair. His shoes squeak against the shiny cold floor and the smell of bleach invades my nostrils. The bank is kept in immaculate shape and I’m not surprised Judge Daniel Porter decided to house his secrets here. It fit his personality in all honesty.
Damien and Ivan flank me on both sides as we go down a graying corridor that is going to secure my destiny as the largest land holder in Texas.
“We’re here, Mr. Safaryan,” the bank manager says opening the door.
I step inside and he hands me a key to the safety deposit box.
“Let me know if any of you gentlemen need anything,” he says before leaving.
When we’re alone, Ivan pulls out a laptop and hands it to Damien who opens it up. He sits down at a table that’s located in the middle of the room.
My eyes roam over the key in my hand and finally I walk over to the slate grey colored boxes to find my number. My fingers tumble along the cool metal.
Box 324 stares back at me and I know it holds all of the secrets I’ll ever need.
“Well do get on with it,” Damien huffs from behind me.
I shot him a glare over my shoulder.
“You don’t understand how long I’ve been waiting for this,” the words tumble from my lips, my mouth feels like I’ve stuffed cotton balls inside.
“I think I can just about guess….how old is Sage again?”
This elicits a quiet cough from Ivan.
Ignoring both of them, I insert the key, pull out the box and slang it onto the table. Damien isn’t wrong about the amount of time though.
Box 324 clatters onto the table, the noises vibrating through the room. Damien opens it and we’re met with documents, letters and finally the Holy Grail. There’s a shit ton of thumb drives lining the bottom of the box. The Judge’s files now belong to me. If you had an ounce of power in the state of Texas, Judge Porter had a file on you because you owed him a favor.
I reach in for the thumb drives.
“All that power locked on these…” my voice trails off as I notice one is different than the others. It’s a greenish gray color.
Sage,I think.
At that moment, rage pours over my body like gasoline. Whatever is on here, no one should ever see it.
“Find the files on Governor Davis,” I tell my brother. “It’s time we good and bury her.”
Damien gives a mock salute and Ivan follows behind me as I exit. We leave out of the bank entirely and Ivan opens the door to the SUV for me just as my phone rings.
