Chapter Twenty-Two

Anaïs

Qualifying is a wash out.Royce beeches the car and Kai gets knocked out in Q3. Tension is high in the garage, and I try and keep out of everyone’s way. Royce is livid, blaming it on another driver and that’s why he had to go wide, taking himself off the track and into the gravel.

He oversteered. It was obvious. We watched it back numerous times. Everything after qualifying has been about that. He brought out a red flag and messed up other drivers’ times, so there are a few that are pissed. It happens, though. He didn’t do it on purpose. Now, he just needs to forget about it and move on.

Locking up my office, I pull my bag onto my shoulder and roll my neck. I need an early night. I’m exhausted. Walking towards the exit of our garage, I am dragged into a room and before I can respond, Creed is standing in front of me.

“You left.”

“I did.” I tug my arm from his grip and cross my arms under my full chest.

His eyes drop.

“I told you it wasn’t over.”

“It was over the moment you let Royce into the room. It was for the best, it was just another sign from the universe that this is not meant to happen.” I swallow, my voice level but inside I am squirming, my mind flashing back to last night.

That one will definitely be used when I am having somesolotime.

“Oh, Ace.” He smirks, placing his arm on the wall next to my head, slightly trapping me in. “It will happen, we’re inevitable.”

“Keep telling yourself that, stud.” I wink. “Now, if you’ll excuse me.” I duck under his arm and open the office door. “I have plans.” I walk away from him, swaying my hips from side to side knowing that he is watching me.

Letting myself into the room,I drop my bag and seek out Nora who is laying on the sofa.

“What a day.” I sigh, dropping down just as she lifts her legs up for me to sit. I place her feet in my lap.

“Tell me about it. I have had to deal with a five-foot nine toddler today.”

“I feel bad for you.” I wince; I know how bad Royce can be when something doesn’t go his way.

“I had to step in so many times when the press got to him.”

I glance over at her, she looks exhausted.

“Why don’t you go and have a bath and we can watch a film?” I suggest “I need to wind down tonight, it’s been a day.” I give her feet a squeeze.

“I wish I could.” She sits up, folding her legs under her. “Saint Onyx want to announce the signing of Cowan on Monday morning. The rumours are in full swing, and Kai is getting twitchy. He knows. He isn’t stupid. So, I need to do damage control and get things under wraps.”

“That sucks.” I sigh.

“Just part of the job, baby girl.”

I push to my feet. “Shall I order room service in?”

“Sounds perfect.” She smiles and I smile back as I walk towards my room.

“Oh, I left you a present on your bed.” My steps falter as I look at the bag sitting pretty in the middle.

I know what bag that is.

I did some ad work with them a year ago.

“The fuck is this?” I call out and I hear her giggling getting closer.
