My phone suddenly rang with a call from Chad.

I squeezed my eyes shut, cursing internally. “Now’s not a good time. I have something urgent I need to take care of.”

“No worries. I just wanted to let you know the real estate agent stopped by,” Chad continued. “She said we can easily get multiple offers after the restoration is complete.”

The room spun.

Real estate agent?

Here?

While Melody was . . .

“Why would you do that?!” I asked.

“What do you mean?” Chad asked. “So we can sell the house after we restore it. Why else?”

“I told you I wasn’t sure if I wanted to sell the house, and now I’m sure I don’t,” I said. “I want to buy out your half and live here.”

“Awesome!” he said. “I don’t have a problem with that at all. We get to keep the property in the family. We both score.”

“Was Melody here when the real estate agent came over?” I asked, even though I was pretty sure I knew the answer.

“Of course she was there. I saw her looking out the attic window. I waved, but I don’t think she saw me.”

I blew out a frustrated breath, trying to keep from exploding.

“Coop—you there?” Chad asked.

“I have to go,” I said, disconnecting the call and knowing I needed to call Melody to make this right.

Scrolling to her name, I froze.

There was a text from her.

I can’t do this anymore. I’m sorry.

Things just kept getting worse.

I called her, pacing back and forth as it went straight to voicemail. “Melody, hey, it’s me. Listen, I know what you read in the diary, and what you saw with Chad, but it’s not what you think. I can explain everything. Please, please call me back.” I couldn’t keep the desperation out of my voice, which was nothing compared to the anxiety and fear ripping my gut apart.

I called two more times, leaving pleading messages when it went straight to voicemail again. I even texted, begging her to let me explain.

The radio silence back was deafening and heartbreaking.

With each unanswered attempt to reach her, the clawing panic rose in my chest that I needed to do something or I was going to lose her over a stupid misunderstanding. But what could I do if she wouldn’t take my calls and if I didn’t know where she was?

In the movies, this was where the guy tracks down the girl’s best friend to explain what happened and then get help.

That was it!

I needed to find Abigail, tell her my side of things, and convince her to help me locate Melody so I could make this right. It was my only shot at fixing this mess before it was too late.

I was just about to run out the door when something crossed my mind, something that gave me goosebumps. As stupid as it sounded and as desperate as I was, I raced to the library and checked the typewriter for a message.

Not surprisingly, there was one waiting for me.

A leap of faith will change everything.
