Cooper: Are you also starting to move in this direction?
Me: You’re very demanding.
Cooper: And you’re elusive.
Me: I prefer the term mysterious.
Just the thought of being able to explore his attic again filled me with so much energy, like I had been drinking a double-shot espresso instead of a smoothie. I loved uncovering mysteries and secrets of the past and sifting through artifacts and mementos. The thrill of dusting off an ancient trunk, opening it, and unveiling its hidden contents from another era was what I lived for. Something told me that Cooper’s attic was filled with intriguing pieces of history, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on them.
Cooper: We need to talk.
Me: I’m on my lunch break. Be back soon.
He started writing a message, then stopped.
Then he started again.
Cooper: Where are you?
Okay, I wasn’t expecting that question.
Where was I? Why would he want to know? Was he going to come down here and drag me back to his house? I was about to find out, because curiosity always got the best of me.
Me: I’m at MooTime Creamery.
He didn’t hesitate with his reply this time.
Cooper: Could you bring me a Peachy Moo smoothie?
Cooper: I’ll pay you back when you get here.
Cooper: Please.
I blinked twice, then glanced down at the Peachy Moo smoothie I was enjoying, wondering what were the chances that he liked the same thing, considering all the things on the menu.
We had something in common?
Mind. Boggled.
Me: No problem.
Cooper: Thanks. You’re a peach.
I shook my head in amusement.
Did Cooper have a sense of humor?
“What’s that smile for?” Abigail asked.
“Nothing,” I said. “I just need to grab another Peachy Moo smoothie to go.”
She glanced at my phone. “Yeah? For whom?”
I hesitated because I was pretty sure she already knew. “Cooper.”
Larissa turned to Lucinda. “You go in there and buy himtwoPeachy Moos. Don’t let her swoop in and steal Cooper!”
A cheesy grin formed on Abigail’s face. “Sorry. I think it’s too late.”
