“You’re welcome,” he said. “Now, do you want to hear my news?”

“Yes!” I said. “How did it go with the TV producer?”

Cooper chuckled. “It’s a done deal. I signed a contract.”

“That’s wonderful!” I said. “Your mom would be proud of you for making this happen.”

“I hope so,” he said. “I wish she could have seen this.”

“She can see it,” I said gently. “She’s watching over you now.”

“You always know just the right thing to say,” he said, voice full of warmth.

“Speaking of, I was thinking we should celebrate this weekend. My TV deal, and your amazing manuscript. How do you feel about a little trip to San Francisco with yours truly?”

“Seriously?”

“You’d better believe it. I would never joke about something like that. I like to celebrate all milestones and accomplishments, big and small.”

My heart skipped a beat at the thought.

“Hmm, spend a weekend in a romantic city with a handsome bestselling author? I suppose I could clear my schedule,” I teased.

“I was hoping you’d say that,” Cooper said. “We’ll visit all the most popular sights, and you can see where I live.”

I pictured us strolling down the streets of San Francisco together, hand-in-hand. Visiting Fisherman’s Wharf, riding the cable cars, exploring Alcatraz. It sounded wonderful.

“That sounds beyond perfect,” I said.

“Great! I’ll book the flights and we can stay at my apartment, of course. And there are two bedrooms, in case you’re wondering. You just bring that beautiful smile of yours and I’ll take care of the rest.”

“It’s a date,” I replied. “I can’t wait to celebrate with you.”

After we disconnected, my heart swelled thinking about the incredible weekend getaway I had in store with a wonderful man.

I popped up to my feet and headed downstairs to get some water. A small break would do me good, then I would work in the attic until Cooper got home.

As I approached the attic stairs, I heard voices floating up from outside. I walked over to the small window overlooking the yard.

Below, I could see Chad standing next to his Ferrari, deep in conversation with a woman in a navy-blue pantsuit. She had a clipboard and seemed to take notes.

“Be prepared,” the woman said. “This house will sell quickly once it hits the market. And expect multiple offers. It’s the perfect time to sell.”

My breath caught in my throat.

She was a real estate agent.

“Are there any tenants at the moment?” the woman asked.

Chad shook his head. “Just my brother, Cooper, but he’ll be headed back to San Francisco soon. He’s only in town temporarily. Also, one of the workers is staying here, but she’ll be gone before him, after the restoration is finished.”

Cooper was leaving then?

Of course, I knew he didn’t live here in Coronado, but I thought there was a chance he was going to stay. We’d said we’d figure it out, but I had never contemplated a long-distance relationship between us. It didn’t sound appealing in the least.

Maybe I was just a fool for letting myself develop feelings for someone who was only here temporarily. Or maybe I needed to take a step back, quit worrying so much, and have more faith that things would work out. I needed to chat with Cooper about this, but something didn’t sit well in my gut.

I took a deep breath and tried to control my emotions, grabbed a glass of water, then continued working in the attic.
