Melody yelped, then swatted at me, her eyes flashing with laughter and revenge. “Oh, you are so going to get it.”

I smirked. “Finally—you’ve kept me waiting long enough.”

Before I knew it, Melody was chasing me down the stairs, shuffling around the corners, our laughter bouncing off the walls.

“Wait!” At the last second, Melody caught up with me and grabbed my hand to pull me into the gift shop.

“What are we doing in here?” I asked.

“Rumor has it Kate’s ghost likes to come here and knock souvenirs and memorabilia off the shelves,” she said.

“A troublemaker, just like you,” I said. “No wonder you like her.”

“Speaking of trouble—the Cooper fan club has arrived,” Melody muttered under her breath.

“What are you talking about?” I asked.

“Don’t look.” Melody was peering over the display. “Lucinda and Larissa are here and, oh crap, they’re looking this way.”

“Those two are everywhere,” I whispered. “Please do me a favor. If they come on to me, pretend you and I are together.”

Melody blinked. “But we are together.”

“No. I meantogether. Like we’re dating.”

She placed her hands on her hips. “And why would I do that?”

“Because those two want to eat me alive,” I said. “Come on, just play along. We’re not hurting anyone. Please.”

“Fine,” Melody whispered, grabbing my hand. “Break a leg.”

“Well, well, well,” a familiar woman’s voice said behind me, her voice dripping with suspicion. “What do we have here?”

I spun around to face them.

Lucinda and Larissa were staring us down.

“I see you’ve got a little hand-holding action going on,” Larissa said, narrowing her eyes. “I’ve got the eyes of a hawk.”

“You said you weren’t interested in Cooper,” Lucinda added.

I turned to Melody. “When did you say that?”

“Before I knew I was interested,” she replied.

I had a feeling I was going to enjoy playing this game.

“Yeah, but remember what Abigail told us?” Larissa said. “ThatCooperlikesMelody.”

“True, she said that,” Lucinda mused. “Something happened.”

“You bet something happened!” I blurted out, grabbing Melody’s hand again. “We’re getting married!”

Melody snapped her head toward me, eyes wide. “Right! Lucky me!”

“Married?? No way, I don’t believe it for a second,” Lucinda scoffed. “You two just met!”

I shrugged. “When you know, you know. She’s the light of my life, my reason for being, my one true pairing . . .” I leaned into her with the side of my arm.
