Melody nodded. “Lots of baboons . . .”
“And cougars.” I chuckled.
“Have you figured out what we’re going to do about our little predicament?” she asked, pumping her eyebrows.
It was hard to read the look she just gave me.
Was Melody referring to the chemistry between us?
Were we actually going to talk about the elephant in the room?
Wasn’t the best course of action to deny it?
They always did that in the movies.
I was honest. “We’re two consenting adults.”
The versatility of her brows was impressive, going from pumped to furrowed in the blink of an eye. “What are you talking about?”
“What areyoutalking about?” I asked.
Melody hesitated, continuing to eye me. “Getting out of the attic! Does your brain need more oxygen?”
Whoops. My bad.
It served me right for trying to guess what a woman could be thinking. I had a better chance of winning the lottery.
“I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page,” I said, trying to recover from my blunder. “I’ll call Alfredo to rescue us.”
Melody shook her head, looking disappointed. “And here this damsel in distress thought you were going to be my knight in shining armor and rescue me all by yourself.”
There! That was a flirt right there, wasn’t it?
Was I misreading her?
My thoughts went back to the dream . . .
Melody in my arms.
Wondering what it was like to kiss her.
I glanced at Romeo, still disappointed in him for waking me up.
Melody snapped her fingers in front of my face. “Are you okay?”
I shrugged. “That depends on who you ask.” I grinned and dug out my phone. “Let me get Alfredo over here. We can figure out how to open up this trunk while we’re waiting for him.”
“Hey, Coop!” Alfredo answered on the first ring. “What’s going on?”
“Not too much,” I said. “Melody and I are stuck in the attic with Romeo. The handle came off the door from the inside. Can you come here, flex a few muscles, and break down the door?”
“Sounds like fun to me!” he said. “Give me a few minutes to grab a sledgehammer.”
“Whatever it takes—thanks,” I said, disconnecting the call.
I turned back toward Melody and froze.
The lock to the trunk was dangling from her finger. “Well, look what I’ve got here.”
