“Maybe so . . .” I smiled and pointed to another flock of geese that landed nearby and started honking. “But they seem to agree with me.”

Lucas smirked. “They’re really sticking their necks out for you. Their loyalty gives me goosebumps.”

I snorted.

My thoughts went back to Lucas and Savannah in that Instagram post. I couldn't fathom why Damian had shared it with me or what he hoped to gain from me seeing that photo. Despite my confusion and annoyance, the fact remained that Lucas had coffee with Savannah, even though he’d said he wanted to avoid her. It made little sense at all, and the curious side of my brain wanted to know why it bugged me so much.

“He showed me a picture of you having coffee with Savannah earlier today,” I said.

“Ahhh—thenyou’rethe one who’s actually jealous,” Lucas said with a mischievous twinkle in his eye.

“Give me a break,” I said.

Seriously? That was my comeback?

The man had me flustered and off my game. Much as I hated to admit it, he was right. I was jealous, but I’d never admit it to him.

“The truth shall set you free,” Lucas said.

I wanted to wipe the smirk off his face, but I appreciated he cared enough to come check on me. That counted more than I wanted to let on.

“There’s nothing to admit,” I said.

Lucas turned to face me, his eyes glittered with mirth. “First you ripped the towel off my body and then clamped onto me like a—”

“Uh, excuse me?” I snorted. “I wouldn’t be surprised if you had the towel hooked up to some auto-release gizmo, the way you flaunt your goods. And I didn’t see you complaining, Hans McBumgrabber.” I rolled my eyes but couldn’t help the grin that spread across my face.

“It’s hard to protest when your vocal cords are jammed against your clavicle.” Lucas chuckled. “Anyway, back to the photo. I assume you were surprised when you saw it?”

I shrugged. “Well . . . yeah.”

“It’s not what you think,” Lucas said. “She wanted to warn me that Damian is looking for revenge. And apparently, it has something to do with you, although I haven’t figured out what it is just yet. That’s why I rushed down here when I saw the two of you together.”

I shook my head in disgust. “What a horrible man. What can he do?”

“I have no idea, but we need to watch out for him.”

Betsy called out from the Inn. “Dinner is served!”

“Good timing,” I said. “I’m starving.” I stood up so fast, I immediately felt dizzy. “Here we go again . . .”

Effortlessly, Lucas grabbed me and held me tight. “I’ve got you. Take a deep breath. Relax.” He pulled me closer and rubbed my back.

I did just as he said, taking a few deep breaths like I had seen him do, and then letting them out slowly. “I’m good. Thanks.”

“Are you sure?” Lucas said. He cleared some hair that had fallen in my eyes, but then left his hand on my cheek. “Take your time.” He caressed the side of my face with his thumb.

My goodness, I loved the way that felt.

I was so close to purring like a cat.

I swallowed hard, wondering what Lucas was thinking.

That was when I saw it.

If I had blinked, I would have missed that microsecond flick of his eyes when he glanced down at my lips, then looked away.

Did he wonder what it would be like to kiss me? I mentally cursed myself for glancing at his lips and wondering the same thing.
