And neither would I.
I pulled into the parking lot at Yanni’s and turned off the engine.
I checked my hair and face in the mirror.
My phone vibrated again.
“Not now.”
Why was Dee going crazy with the text messages today?
Had Brandon proposed?
I got out of the car, taking a deep breath before entering Yanni’s. I spotted Nick, his parents, and Lindsey at the first table on the right.
“Hey, everyone.” I smiled, a little out of breath. “Sorry, I’m late.”
Nick looked over at me first and did a double take.
His face was rigid.
He wasn’t blinking.
Come on. Technically I’m only five minutes late.
That was nothing at all. There was no way he could be mad because of that.
Nick’s parents, Jan and Ralph, were avoiding eye contact with me.
Hi daughter, Lindsey, was glaring at me.
What the heck was going on?
I glanced down to make sure my dress wasn’t stuck in my panties again.
Nope. All good.
Something had happened.
Nick stood and turned toward me. “What are you doing here?”
I blinked and looked around. “What do you mean?”
Something was seriously wrong, and I had no idea what it was.
He crossed his arms and blew out a breath. “You didn’t listen to my message?”
I shook my head. “No. I heard my phone vibrate a few times, but I was running late and didn’t check it. What’s going on? Why is everyone so serious? Did I get the time wrong?”
Maybe someone died, but who?
Something wasn’t right.
I glanced over at Nick’s parents again.
They were still avoiding eye contact.
Lindsey looked like she wanted to jump over the table and strangle me.
