He shook his head. “I’m not talking about that.”

“Oh . . .” I was confused but needed to let him finish. I took a deep breath and waited.

“I’m talking about what you did for Jay, saving his company and his job. Hell, how did you evendothat? It doesn’t matter. I just can’t believe what you sacrificed. Dee told me you quit your job.”

I nodded. “I did what I had to do.”

“My point is that you did something out of the kindness of your heart. The nicknameRuthlessdoesn’t even apply to you anymore. It’s not fair you had to sacrifice your job.”

“It was my fault all this happened in the first place.”

He held up his hand. “Please, let me finish.”

I nodded.

Nick blew out a deep breath. “The thing is, I overreacted. It wasn’t fair. I was taking out my frustrations, some of the baggage I had with my ex-wife, and lumping it together with what had happened with you. I should’ve let you explain yourself in the restaurant instead of jumping all over you. Then I found out that you were really trying to help Jay, and that you were screwed over by your own company. I didn’t know that, and I apologize for not giving you the benefit of the doubt.”

“I’m the one who should be apologizing here.” I rubbed my forehead. “What else did Dee tell you?”

“Everything.” He locked gazes with me. “She told you how you feel about me. Is it true?”

I swallowed hard as my heart began to pound again.

I could feel my face getting hot.

Why would she tell him that? It was the truth, but that wasn’t the point!

I finally nodded. “It’s true. I love you.”

Please tell me you love me back or I’m going to die right here on the spot.

Nick took a step closer to me. “The thing is . . . I promised myself I would never fall in love with someone like you.”

Definitelynotwhat I was hoping to hear.

“I was mad when it had happened because I didn’t think there was any way for us to have a future together. I’d convinced myself of that, but I was wrong.”

“Wait, wait, wait.” I held up my hand and then placed it on top of my head, more confused than ever. “I’m sorry. Back up. Please. You’re killing me right now.” I rubbed my temples with my fingers. “When you say you were wrong, is it because you don’t love me, or were you wrong thinking there could be no future between us, or wrong because you were convinced, and now you’re not convinced?”

“I love you, Ruth.”

I blinked twice and whispered, “Please say that again.”

“I love you.”

Tears of joy and relief streamed down my face. “Whydidn’t you start with those three words from the very beginning? Do you know what you were doing to my heart?”

He chuckled. “I happen to be an expert in the ways of the heart.” He grinned and grabbed my hand, placing it against his chest where the scar was. “Andthisheart is all yours.”

Nick stepped closer, grabbed me by the waist, and pulled me against his body.

I love this feeling.

Then he kissed me.

Heaven.

Nick broke off the kiss and looked into my eyes. “What was Judy talking about when she saidyou did it? What exactly did you do?”
