I open the message from Mr. G, his words clipped…

G: Guard reported missing on mission. Immediate search and extraction required. Coordinates inbound. Could be a hot one. Move now.

My gut tightens, the peace of the picnic shattered. Another Guard, missing, maybe in danger, and we’re the ones to bring him home.

I look at Billie, his eyes searching mine, sensing the shift.

“Little One,” I say, keeping my voice steady. “We’ve got to go. A fellow Guard’s in trouble, and we need to find him, maybe rescue him. Right now.” I cup his cheek, hating the worry creeping into his expression. “Don’t be sad or worried, okay? I’ll be back soon. I promise.”

Billie’s lip trembles, but then his face lights up with that fierce pride.

“I’m not sad, Daddy,” Billie says, his voice strong, his eyes locked on mine. “I’m proud of you. You’re such a hero, and it makes me so happy to call you my Daddy. I know you’ll be back—you’re the toughest, smartest Daddy ever.”

My perfect boy’s words hit me hard, filling my chest with warmth, and I see the trust in his eyes. It’s undeniable. My Little has faith in me, and it makes my chest burst with pride.

I pull my darling boy into my arms, kissing him deeply, his lips soft and sweet against mine, a promise of our forever. The kiss is quick but fierce, sealing our understanding—he knows I’m a Guard, a hero, and I know he’s my brave Little, waiting for me.

I pull back, brushing my thumb across his cheek, and he smiles, his eyes shining with love and confidence.

“Go save him, Daddy,” Billie whispers, and I nod, my heart complete.

I stand, signaling Cole, Connor, and Henry.

“Let’s move,” I say, my voice all Guard now, the mission taking over.

The Littles are watching, their games paused, but Billie’s already rallying them, his voice bright as he suggests a new game to keep them busy.

I catch his eye one last time, his wave full of sass and trust, and I know we’re in this together, all the way.

The four of us Guards head for the park exit safe in the knowledge that the chopper that will be landing on the penthouse roof shortly on the edge of the park, our gear ready, our minds locked on the mission.

I’m leaving my boy, but I’m coming back.

Because with Billie, my life’s complete, and nothing is ever going to break that.

ONE YEAR LATER

The sun streams through the big windows of my playroom, painting the pastel pink walls with golden light, and I’m giggling so hard my sides ache.

I’m in my pirate-themed romper, black with little skull-and-crossbones patches, a red bandana tied around my head, and Felix is tucked under my arm, sporting a tiny eye patch Max made for him.

My Daddy’s across the room, dressed as the fiercest pirate captain ever, his eye patch askew, a plastic sword in his hand, and a growl in his voice as he points at the ball pit.

“Ye’ll walk the plank, Little Pirate!” Daddy declares, his blue eyes twinkling with mischief. “Ye’ll walk or ye shall face my pirate paddle on your treacherous buttocks!”

This is our life now, in our new suburban house, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

It’s been a year since Max came back from that rescue mission, saving his fellow Guard just like he promised.

We moved into this house a few months ago, a cozy place with a big yard and a playroom Max built just for me, like we dreamed about.

The room is just perfect—shelves stuffed with glitter pens, coloring books, and stuffies, a fluffy rug for tea parties, fairy lights twinkling overhead.

Right now, it’s our pirate ship, and I’m pretending to be a rebellious crewmate, stomping my foot and sticking out my tongue.
