“We didn’t even manage to undress all the way.”

“I know. You still have your socks on.” I giggled. “And your tie.”

“What about you?” he demanded. “I was barely able to get your nylons off.” He got up and quickly removed the rest of his clothes. “Shower?”

“Definitely,” I said. No doubt my makeup was running down my face and my hairline was dotted with sweat. I’d never felt sexier, especially when he looked down at me with a heated, lingering gaze.

He helped me off the floor and then cupped the back of my head. Flynn stared into my eyes for a moment and then gave me a long, drugging kiss that promised more.

“I’m going to check my messages and then I’ll meet you in the shower,” I said.

“Are you expecting trouble?” he asked.

“No. I expect the nannies to have everything handled, but you never know with our children.”

“Duly noted,” he said dryly. “I called to say goodnight earlier, and I swore I could hear the gears in Hawk’s head whirring with a new idea about how to cause trouble.”

“He lives in a constant state of wreaking havoc. I’ve accepted it at this point.”

“You love it. Don’t lie.”

“I do love it. He’s a force to be reckoned with, and at just seven years old, it’s impressive. I’m proud of the little monster.”

Flynn strolled naked to the bathroom, and it wasn’t until the door shut that I went for my purse. When I’d arrived at The Rex hours earlier, the front desk had given me a key to the penthouse suite. There was always one penthouse suite in every Rex Hotel that was empty so that if Flynn and I traveled unexpectedly, we had a room waiting for us.

My phone was at the bottom of my purse, and I dug it out. I had a few missed texts, one from Ash, another from Sasha. I ignored both. Nothing from the nannies.

I had one voicemail from an unknown number.

Terror coiled in my stomach. I’d been waiting for and dreading this phone call.

Ignoring it wasn’t going to make it go away.

I had to know.

I pressed the button to listen to the voicemail and put the phone to my ear.

“Mrs. Campbell, this is Dr. Elmond. I’ve taken a look at your MRI and I need to discuss the results with you in person. Please call me at your earliest convenience.” He paused and then when he spoke again, his tone was softer, “Barrett, the sooner the better.” He left his personal cell phone number as well as the number to the hospital. And then the voicemail ended.

I lowered the phone and stared at the screen. The dread that settled in my stomach spread out like a spider web through rest of my body, infecting me with fear, remorse, and finality.

“Barrett,” Flynn called. “Get your arse in here! Sometime before I die would be nice!”

I flinched at his words.

I set my phone aside.

After the shower.

I’d tell him after we showered.

Flynn’s cell phone rang on the nightstand. I went to look at the screen and saw that Rex Security was calling. It rang a few more times, but then fell silent. A moment later, it started ringing again, along with the hotel phone.

A chill of foreboding swept over me.

I grabbed his cell phone and took it into the bathroom.

“Flynn,” I said. “Rex Security is trying to get ahold of you.”
