I don’t say anything. It’s Honey that speaks first. She turns her body into mine and clears her throat.
“Was it enough?” she asks him. I’m proud of her. Her voice doesn’t even waver, not even while I can feel her hand shaking in mine.
“It was,” Zeus says with a nod.
“Then we’re going home. We don’t owe you a fucking thing. Not anymore.”
Zeus sighs and shakes his head. “We’ll see about that, but for now, yes, you’re free to leave.”
“Generous of you,” I tell him. He grins at me. The sight of his smile makes me want to cross the room and do exactly what Connie asked me not to. I don’t. It would complicate things more than I can afford. I need to get Honey home. I need distance and my own world to decide how I’m going to fix all of this. I’m not stupid enough to think Zeus’ plan ends here. There’s more the fucker has in store for us.
I dip my chin at Connie and guide Honey through the main room. When we pass Zeus, I pause and level a stare at him. He’s not making a move to stop us. He looks happy. Downright fucking delighted. Crazy asshole.
“We’ll be in touch.”
“Oh, of that I have no doubt, Lawson. Welcome to the family.”
CHAPTERTWENTY
HONEY
What the fuck do you do when you just married the man you love and got fucked in a hallway? Try not to have a fucking existential crisis, that’s what.
I’m shaking, trying to get my shit together, but it’s tough. It feels like trying to do the impossible, really. I’m shaking like a leaf and I can’t manage to stop feeling like I’m about to puke all over the leather seats in Law’s car. When we exited the club, it was early morning. Just before dawn. At the sight of the purple and light blue starting to color the sky, exhaustion crashed over me like a fucking tidal wave. Taylor wasn’t surprised to see me on Law’s arm. He didn’t ask any questions either, just murmured a genuine sounding,“It’s good to see you again, Ms. Martinez.”
“That’s not her name.” Taylor’s eyes went to Law in question and I don’t say anything when Law continues, “It’s Sokolov now. She’s my wife.”
I stare at my hands and take another deep breath. The last twenty-four hours have changed everything for me. Again. It’s like my life is a snow globe a drunk toddler is in charge of. As soon as things settle, everything is shaken and thrown around until I can’t make sense of it. Yesterday morning, I was shopping with Zeus. I thought I’d found a place to settle into.
A family. A father. I’d gotten my first taste of vengeance and it was fucking sweet. I’m paying for all of it now, though. I glance at Law. He’s on his phone, fingers flying across the screen as he responds to a seemingly never ending stream of messages. His phone hasn’t stopped lighting up with notifications since we left the club.
The ride to Law’s penthouse is quiet and quick. There’s not a lot of traffic this early in the morning. It’s surreal as we drive into the underground garage and walk through the parked cars. It’s silent, my heels click on the concrete and I concentrate on the elevator in front of us. The shiny metal of it slides open with a ding and when I hesitate, Law’s hand at the small of my back nudges me forward.
I look up at him to see his eyes are on me. “Get inside, Honey.”
I want to tell him no, but it’d be a lie. I’ve been lying the entire time we’ve been apart. I’m so tired of lying that I just nod and let him guide me into the elevator. When we turn, I see Taylor taking up a post at the back of Law’s car. He looks like he’s settling in for the long haul.
“Why is Taylor staying?” I ask.
“Need to make sure we weren’t followed.”
I cross my arms and lean back against the elevator wall. “Why would we be followed?”
“I just walked out of there with you. Do you really think he’s going to let you go that easy?”
I pull a face, because I wouldn’t call what we had to go througheasy. “You’re calling that easy?”
“We got out alive, didn’t we?” He asks.
I bite my lip. I hadn’t considered that. Not really. “Could we- I mean, do you think it would have…” My voice trails off because I don’t know what else to say.
“Would have what? Ended with one of us dead?” Law asks. His voice is casual, like this is normal. I stare at him when he gives me a shrug. “The thought crossed my mind. I expected it when I went in there after you. Thought I might have to do it myself when it came to your father.”
“You were planning on killing him?” I gasp.
The elevator dings and the doors slide open. Law doesn’t answer me, just exits the elevator and motions for me to follow him.
“Move it.”
