He was silent, but his look told me everything. The past that I didn’t know about, the one that I was content to look past, reared its ugly head and I felt my stomach go tight. “Holy shit, you’re serious, aren't you?”
He looked away. “I’m going to find them,” was all he said.
“What did that one say?” I asked, nodding at the phone he was still holding.
“How long have they been sending these?” he said instead, holding the phone out to me.
“A few weeks,” I whispered, and I was glad I had whispered because Law’s face got scary.
“This has been going on for weeks and you didn’t tell me?”
“It was just one, well, until tonight,” I informed him. I reached out and took the phone, my curiosity getting the better of me. I needed to see what they’d sent that had Law swearing he was going to find them.
‘You owe me and I’m going to take everything from you’
I sucked in a breath and stared down at the number in shock. “Fuck this,” I whispered, and hit the block button. “I’m done with that. I should have blocked it sooner.”
“No, what you should have done was tell me sooner.”
“It’s not that big of a deal,” I lied, and Law glowered.
“The fuck it isn’t. Someone’s sending you fucked up messages and you don’t think it’s a big deal? What the hell is wrong with you?”
I jerked back as if I had been slapped. “Nothing iswrongwith me. This is just not as big of a deal as you’re making it out to be.”
“You don’t think some creep texting you they’re going to take everything from you isn’t a big deal? You wanna tell me why you’re playing this off?”
I bit my lip and looked away. “Because I don’t want anything to ruin this.”
“Ruin what?”
“This,” I said, throwing an arm out between us. “Us. I don’t want you to think I’m too much, or my life is just-just, I don’t know, shit and you get tired of it and go.” My voice broke. “I don’t want you to go.”
“Honey.” Law moved towards me, arms circling my waist as he pulled me close. “Princess, that’s not going to happen. You didn’t ask for this bullshit. Why would you think I’d leave?”
Because everyone leaves.
I squeezed my eyes shut and let my head fall forward against his shoulder. I didn’t say it, but the words were loud as anything in my brain. I shook my head. “I don’t know.”
“You have to tell me what’s going on. We’re together.” He moved, hand going into my hair as he tilted my head back to look at him. “I’m yours.”
My breath caught at that. The soft side of Law once more coming out and making me weak in the knees. “And I’m yours.”
I leaned into his touch, arms going around his waist, face pressed to his chest. The thump of his heartbeat comforting and grounding. “I’m sorry, I didn’t tell you. I hoped it was a wrong number.”
“Now that we know it isn’t I’ll figure it out.”
“How?” I asked, closing my eyes.
“Lot of things you don’t know about me, Honey.”
That should have made me wonder, but it didn’t. A man like Lawson was bound to have secrets. “I know.”
He was silent, his eyes scanning my face and for a second I got lost in the blue of them. He had beautiful eyes. I wished they didn’t look so concerned, so focused, like they did now. I liked it when they were open and warm like the summer sky in Texas. I felt my stomach twist into a knot. I’d done this to his eyes.
“I’ll figure it out. You’re going to be safe. I want you to tell me if someone sends another fucking message to you. Got it?”
I nodded. “Okay.”
