“You heard him. Up and out.” Addie took a step towards where Katie was sitting. “Or am I going to have to have security escort you?”
Her mouth dropped open. “You can’t possibly mean me?” she asked, putting a hand to her chest. The room went deadly quiet. The weight and tension of it nearly made it material and then Law was moving. He stood from his desk and started walking, he started walking right towards me.
“I do. You have five seconds to get the hell out of my office before security is on the way. Take your shit proposal with you.”
“But the deal!”
“Fuck the deal. You can explain what you did to the Yakahama family. I’m sure they will be overjoyed to know how disrespectful you were to my girlfriend.”
A feather could have knocked my ass over. His girlfriend?I’d been agonizing over that very thing on the way here and then Law just cut right through any and all discussion without so much as a blink of an eye. He was claiming me right here, and right now, without a second thought.
I grinned watching him approach, a spluttering Katie now standing from her seat while Addie shoved her proposal folder back at her and marched her towards the door.
“Four seconds, three seconds…” Addie counted down, sounding gleeful to do it. “He’s serious, so I wouldn’t waste any time trying to get him to change his mind.”
“This is ridiculous! Please reconsider. This is an extremely lucrative opportunity for both of our companies! You know th-”
Addie let out a growl that sounded way too big for her small frame. “Two seconds, and finally, one second!Times up. Move it.”
Law reached out, cupping my face in his hands as he kissed me. “I’m sorry about that.”
“It’s okay,” I told him, smiling up at him. Neither of us looked at Katie who was at the door with Addie calling for Taylor to help her take out the trash. In exactly those words. I had to bite back a giggle at the glee I heard in Addie’s voice.
“Be a dear will you, big guy?” Addie asked, and I knew Taylor was already tripping over himself to help her by the screech Katie let loose before the door slammed shut behind them. He so had a crush on her. Cute.
Looking up at Law, I had a flash of Déjà vu with the scene so reminiscent of the day we had met. When he had called me his fiancée. It had been fake then, a kindness thrown to me with the attention of a busy coffee shop and my panic kicking into overdrive. But now? Now it was real, or at least I hoped it was.
“You weren’t just saying that to make a point to her, were you?” I asked, hoping I didn’t sound as unsure as I felt. What if he hadn’t meant it? God. What would that mean for us?
The fingers combing through my hair went still. “Just saying what?”
I cleared my throat and then said, “That I’m your girlfriend.”
He frowned and leaned back to look at me, his thumbs rubbing lightly against my skin, and he shook his head. “No, I meant that. Why would you think I didn’t?”
“It’s just that once upon a time, you called me your fiancée to save me, or have you already forgotten that?” I teased.
He grinned at me and kissed me again. This time it wasn’t chaste or quick but a real and proper kiss, one that had me moaning at the first slide of Law’s tongue against mine. His hands moved, sliding up into my hair as he pulled it free from the bun I wore. He twisted the length up and around his fist, and I sighed happily. I loved it when he did that.
I leaned into Law’s arm, letting him support my weight and smiled up at him. “How did you saving me from snippy blondes become the foundation of our relationship?” I asked him. “I’m not sure I like that.”
He chuckled. “I wouldn’t call it the foundation. More like a catalyst,” he said, giving my hair a gentle tug for emphasis.
“What was the deal you were working on?” I asked, looking over my shoulder towards the closed door. I wondered if Katie was gone or if she was being dragged out by Taylor.
“Doesn’t matter. They needed it. I didn’t. Her employers aren’t going to be pleased she fucked it up, but that’s on her ass,” Law replied and kissed me again before he took my hand and led me over to the couch that sat to the left of his massive office. “I’ve got a little work left to finish before we leave. Do you want Addie to bring you anything?” There were floor-to-ceiling windows behind his desk which provided a beautiful look at the district. The Hudson glittered in the distance, and I let out a whistle at the sight of it.
I shook my head no and sank down into the surprisingly comfortable couch. It was chic and classy just like the rest of the place, not the kind of couch you expected comfort from, but I should have guessed differently considering Law’s taste. He had only the best, even if he wasn’t the one enjoying it.
“You always have the best views.”
He nodded. “What’s the point of all this work if I don’t?”
“Good point.”
“I’m glad I get to share them with you.” He kissed the top of my head. “It makes all of it worth it.”
God. This man. Law gave my hand a squeeze and went back to his desk. How was he this good to me? How were things this perfect? I leaned back on the couch watching him, and this moment, when I was normally terrified of perfect, scared to death that I would lose it at any second, was the moment I forced myself to relax. I took in a deep breath and relaxed further into the couch I sat on. The familiar feeling of a weight unseen about to drop on my head fading into the background of the quiet in Law’s office.
