“You.You were the job, Honey.”

Chapter Twenty-Seven

HONEY

“What?” I whispered, feeling like I’d just gotten slapped in the face. I blinked, trying to hold back the tears that were already coming. Law was trying to take my hand again, but I took a quick stutter step back. “What?”

“You were the job, Honey,” Connie said again. She gave me a sad smile, one that seemed genuine in its contriteness.

I shook my head. “I’m going to need a lot more fucking information than that. Explain.” I looked at Law. “Now.”

“They’re lying. Don’t listen to them.”

I heard my mother sigh. The sound of it made me want to scream. “I didn’t raise you to cuss.”

“You didn’t raise me,” I shot back. I knew better than to engage her. That it was better to walk away than let her send me into a full on reaction, but I was done. The stress of the last week, the trauma of being grabbed, of what had happened in the Catskills, walking in here tonight. It had stretched me within an inch of my existence, and I was done.

“You don’t talk to me,” I ordered, cutting her off when she moved from the chair she’d been sitting in. That stupid fucking chair that looked like a throne more than anything. What the hell was she doing here? Why was she here to see it all come crashing down around me?

Why. Was. She. HERE.

“We hired Law to keep watch over you.”

“Honey, you need to trust me. We have to leave.”

“That one night?” I asked, swallowing hard and ignoring Law’s words. It had been true. She’d told me from the beginning that I would have protection. A chaperone to make me feel calm with Christian in attendance. But things had moved past Christian being a worry. Someone had put him up to texting me. Someone we didn’t know.

“This goes beyond that night,” Connie said. She was beside Law now and she flicked her wrist, holding the papers out to him. Law looked down at the papers as if he didn’t want them and I moved, stepping close and snatching them out of her hand in a move that surprised us all. I hadn’t known I was going to grab them until I did it, but now that I had them in hand…

I felt my stomach drop. At the top of one paper, I could see the words Deed of Partial Ownership emblazoned across with a fancy notary stamp.

“What the fuck?” I whispered. I felt Law come close and moved again, the skirt of my dress getting tangled in my heels as I stumbled, but I kept reading, not bothering to look up. There was a heavy cardstock, the kind that I recognized as the stationary Connie favored, and the memory of the note she’d sent me all those weeks ago flashed in front of me.

I jerked it to the front, eyes scanning the page and felt the world tilt as I read the letter.

Law,

The submissive you will meet tonight is under Zeus’ protection.

You are truly the only Dominant in the club tonight to be trusted with her. You will be introduced in confidence by myself. Trust that I understand your tastes and she will be precisely your flavor. I have no doubt the pair of you will enjoy yourselves tonight.

This submissive will be under stress tonight and for that reason you would be the perfect company for her to keep. You will, of course, be compensated heavily by Zeus for your presence.

I know you hate games.

Sorry about that.

Connie

PS: Give the girl a chance!

Connie was telling the truth. That meant only one thing.

“You lied,” I said, looking at Law. “Why did you lie?” Our eyes met, the blue pair I had come to love nothing but ice. The warmth of my man was gone—there was nothing there now but distance. The shadow of a man that I did not know. I watched Law’s face go to stone. He was standing right in front of me, but it felt like there were a million miles between us.

Who was this man?

He raised a hand, holding it out to me. “We have to leave. Right now, Honey.”
