“Her wolf couldn’t heal her?”
He shook his head. “I’m not sure if it caused damage to her wolf or just a disconnect. Grandpappy swears he can still feel her inside, and they can talk a little through their bonded connection, but not much. As far as I know she hasn’t been able to shift since the accident.”
“Mommy, fix,” Vada demanded again.
“I’m not sure mommy can do anything to help. When was the fall?” I asked.
“Six years ago.”
I nodded sadly. I didn’t think there was anything I could do, but Vada’s insistence didn’t stop as she grabbed my hands and placed one on each side of Tabitha’s face.
A shock ran through me as I gasped.
“Lucy!” Micah yelled in the distance, but it was too late.
The room around me faded away as I found myself lost in a different sort of darkness. It wasn’t uncommon for me to see inside a person during a healing. I don’t know if sight was exactly the right word though. It wasn’t like I had x-ray vision or anything. It was a different sort of vision filled with contrasting dark and light.
In this moment I was trapped in pure darkness. I could feel goosebumps break out across my skin and a warm hand comfort me.
Up ahead, just out of reach was a tiny dot of light. In my mind, I moved towards it. The closer I got, the brighter the light became until I was surrounded by it, looking out into the darkness.
Trapped had been a good word. This woman was literally trapped inside her own mind and body. I had no idea how long I was there. Time lost all meaning.
It was as if I could see her memories, experience her life as I sifted through it all.
The day she met Marshal.
Mallick’s birth.
The stress and love of watching her son grow up.
Becoming a grandmother. The joy of that moment was overwhelming.
The images kept coming, sad ones, happy ones, scary ones. I could see it all, the full journey this woman’s life had taken, and then it just stopped.
None of this was anything like I’d ever experienced before. I’d healed numerous people, but not like this. Bones, muscles, physical injuries were easy, this was something entirely different.
It felt as if I sat there staring back at her past, with nothing but darkness ahead of me. The synapses of her brain were broken. I could see the point of break similar to a broken bone, but I didn’t know how to fix it.
I reached out to touch it as I would an injury, but hot pain shot through my body and I heard screaming in the distance.
Vaguely aware of Micah’s presence, I felt him pull me back, but I fought against it, instead pulling from the power of our bond. It boosted my strength, but I knew instantly it wasn’t going to be enough.
“No!” I yelled as I touched the break once more. I had to try.
“I help!” I heard a sweet voice in the distance and then felt a new presence--Vada.
Her hands were on mine causing an intense jolt of electricity to run through me. I channeled that energy to the break point and was thrown back with the power of it.
Strong arms wrapped around me as I sank back into darkness.

When I came to, I was first aware of the laughter around me. Slowly my eyes opened to show I was lying in a bed in a small room surrounded by people. Micah was sitting next to me, my head in his lap.
“Vada?” I asked.
“I here mommy.”
