“Huh?”

“Mommy say we move here wif you.”

“She told you that?”

She nodded as I stood back and watched, wondering how he’d react to her proclamation.

He swooped her up into his arms and proceeded to show her each of the bedrooms.

“So, you can’t have mine and Mommy’s room which is this one,” he said showing her the room. “But any other room can be yours. Which would you like?”

“Dis one,” she said without hesitation pointing to the room closest to the master bedroom.

“Done,” he assured her. “We need to move out this stuff and make room for your things, huh?”

“Uh-huh. Dat Vada room now.”

My eyes misted over. This was really happening.

Later that evening while Micah settled Vada in for the night, insisting I rest up, I couldn’t help but start to imagine what life could be like for us with Micah playing a big role in it.

The future had always terrified me, but now, it didn’t look so dark, or lonely. Vada was thriving here, and no one really seemed to think anything of her unique situation. They treated her like a normal, healthy kid. It was more than I ever allowed myself to believe possible.

“Is she down?”

“She is. You look exhausted. Ready for bed?”

“Is that a loaded question?” I asked, letting him pull me to my feet.

“I promise to behave and let you sleep… for tonight at least.”

“How did I get so lucky?”

“Pretty sure, I’m the lucky one, babe.”

Chapter 20

The day flew by. Things were still busy, but not nearly as bad. Despite the craziness of the weekend, since Lucy and I had made a verbal commitment to each other, things were quickly falling back into step.

We made a great team. Her organizational skills were every bit as tight as mine. She was the perfect woman by my side and not just in my personal life.

Still, I didn’t want to push her too hard, too fast, but when I got slammed just before closing with a gnash to the head and an infected splinter, I broke down and asked for help.

“Look, I don’t know how you’ll feel about this, but if we’re going to make it to my parents’ house on time for dinner, I could really use your help.”

“Sure, what it is?”

“Any chance you’d be up for healing that heal wound while I tackle the splinter?”

She froze and her eyes widened.

“If you’re not comfortable actually healing it, that’s okay, just bandage and send him on his way. It’s just a surface wound, but you know how head wounds bleed like a sonofabitch.”

I thought she was going to turn me down, but much to my surprise, she agreed.

Knowing she would be worried about Vada being left alone, I snatched her up and took her with me.
