I nodded. “Thank you both. You don’t know what this means to me.”
“Thank us?” Lorraine said. “We’re the ones who need to thank you.”
Mallick snorted. “Do you have any idea how long this woman has been waiting for a grandpup?”
“And I can’t imagine a more perfect one.”
My phone rang and I gasped when I saw Vanessa’s name pop up.
“Hello?”
“Hi Lucy. I was just checking to see if everything was okay and if Vada would be coming in today.”
“What time is it?”
“A little after nine.”
“Oh no. I’m so sorry. We were dealing with some family stuff,” I decided was the best way to explain it. “And I just lost track of time. Is it okay if I bring her over now?”
“Sure, anytime. I heard about the incident over at the Shay’s house and I just wanted to make sure everything was okay.”
“Thanks for checking on us. She’s fine. I’ll have her there soon.”
I hung up and sighed.
“Sorry, that was the school. Vada is late and it’s after nine, so we are too. The clinic should have opened already.”
“Are you working over at the clinic?” she asked.
“I am. I started last week.”
“She’s a healer, Lorraine. What better place for her to be?”
“A healer! After all you shared, you forgot to mention that little tidbit.”
I blushed. “It’s not something I really talk about.”
“Well, you should. That’s something to be proud of,” she insisted.
“And it’ll come in handy working with Micah,” his father added.
“If you’re taking Vada over to the school, and Micah needs to open the clinic, why don’t I come with you.”
“Oh, thanks, but you don’t have to do that.”
“Nonsense, I’d love to. Who do you have on your emergency contact list?”
“Huh?”
“For Vada’s school. You had to have given them an emergency contact. I’m assuming that’s Micah.”
“Um, no, actually, I didn’t know him when I signed her up. I actually met him because of it.”
“What do you mean?” Mallick asked.
“The school required me to get a physical for her. I walked in and there he was.”
“And how did you handle that, dear?”
