He knew Valaria would take some heat over ditching the Duke to celebrate his birthday with him. She chose to do it anyway. Seeing her in that royal setting also solidified what he already knew. She was his friend, his best friend even, but that was all it could ever be. She would never be his. Being the Keeper ensured they had a life of friendship together. He was okay with that. His decision was made.
Zallon kept asking for hints on the way over. Where Arion was a complete peace with his choice, Zallon was a nervous wreck waiting to hear that final verdict.
As they entered the castle walls, Arion immediately spotted Taneth who walked over to greet him.
“Sir Taneth,” Zallon acknowledged with a nod of his head.
“Zallon. It’s great to see you as always,” Taneth replied. “I hear today is a big day for you, Arion. I hope it goes just as you wish.”
“Thank you, sir,” Arion said.
They continued on deeper into the castle. Just outside the King’s chambers his friends were waiting. Garron, Jeffrid, and Kyler were all hovering around the door on lookout for Arion.
“What are you doing here?” Arion asked them, happy to see them.
“We heard today was your big day. We didn’t want to miss the announcement,” Kyler said excitedly.
“Choose well,” Jeffrid said stoically making them all laugh.
“We’ll support you whatever you decide, but it is pretty cool telling people I know the next High Keeper of Magic,” Garron teased. “Don’t take that away from me.”
Arion saw Zallon watching him closely. He liked knowing the old wizard was stressing out worried he wouldn’t accept the apprenticeship.
“I guess we’ll know soon,” Arion said.
The doors opened, and a herald ushered them in. Compared to most of the King’s duties, this was quite informal.
“Remember your manners and training,” Zallon whispered as they started walking forward.
“Good luck,” Garron said just before the doors shut between them.
Arion held his head high and walked to the center of the room to kneel before the King.
“Arise, Arion,” the King said formally. “I know you are aware of why you’ve been called here today.”
“Yes, sir.”
“I must say I was surprised when Zallon confessed to me yesterday that he has no idea if you are planning to accept the position of apprentice to someday assume his role as the High Keeper of Magic, or not. I believe he said it was a 50-50 chance.”
Arion smiled. “Yes, sir.”
“Are you prepared to answer?”
“Yes, sir. I am.”
“Very well, let’s get on with the formality as I know we’re all anxious to hear your response. Arion, it has been recommended by Zallon, High Keeper of Magic, to appoint you as his personal apprentice where you will train and learn under his guidance with the knowledge that you will someday assume his role as the High Keeper to serve and protect this kingdom against all evil to the best of your abilities. Do you so accept?”
Arion looked around the room noting how quiet everyone had gotten as they waited for him to speak. “I do so accept,” he finally responded.
Zallon looked visibly relieved as a smile broadened across his face. He clapped Arion on the back with pride. “You chose well.”
“I know. It’s the right path for me,” Arion said without hesitation.
Valaria burst into the room. “I’m sorry I’m late. Did I miss it?”
“I’m afraid so, my dear. He accepted,” the King told her.
“What?” she asked, surprised. “Why? Did they tell you everything you have to give up?”
