“I’m fully aware of the requirements,” Arion admitted.

“You’re giving up a chance for happiness, for love, to devote your life to studying?”

“Yes,” he simply said.

“But Arion…”

“That’s enough Valaria. He’s made his choice,” her father said.

She gave him a sad look and turned to stomp off through the main hallway.

“What’s her problem?” Garron asked as the others began filing out.

“She’ll be fine,” Arion said softly. He didn’t understand her outburst, unless she had been feeling things too, but none of that mattered because they could never be together. He stood firm in his decision. It was best for the both of them.

“So, what did you decidegarro?” Kyler asked.

“He accepted,” Zallon said proudly.

They all cheered in excitement.

The King stepped out of his chambers. “I do hope you’ll stay for lunch.”

“Can my friends join us?” Arion asked without hesitation.

“Of course. Today is your celebration.”

“Thank you, sir. This is Garron, Kyler, and Jeffrid.” He had no idea if the King knew who they were or not, but it seemed like introducing them was the right thing to do. Kyler’s eyes that were nearly bugging out of his head.

“Welcome boys. I look forward to talking with you over lunch. If you’ll excuse me, I have a few things to address before then.”

Kyler’s jaw dropped as he watched him leave. “That was the King. He knows my name,” he said in awe.

Jeffrid elbowed him. “Be cool. You look ridiculous. It’s no big deal.”

“No big deal? We’re having lunch with the King. That’s a very big deal. And Arion is going to be the High Keeper of Magic someday. That’s a very, very big deal,” Garron insisted.

Zallon excused himself as the four boys stood around talking until a young boy approached them.

“Are you Arion the Apprentice?” he asked.

“It sure is Micah. My friend Arion,” Garron said proudly.

Micah rolled his eyes. “Right,” he said in disbelief before turning back to Arion. “I was sent to retrieve you for lunch.”

“Thank you,” Arion said. “I’m starving. Come on fellas.”

“Wait? You’re really having lunch with the King, Garron? How?”

Garron laughed. “I really am. This is Arion.”

“Everyone knows who he is,” the kid said.

“My friend,” Garron added.

Micah laughed. “No way.”

“Arion, this is my little brother, Micah,” Garron said. The kid’s eyes went wide.
