“You do that.” I slid out of the booth. I couldn’t do this right now. “I’ll talk to you later.”

Before he could respond, I made for the door, not daring to look around at Leslie and his posse. As I slipped out into the warm night, the wind whipped up, blowing my hair back, a few drops of rain hitting my face.

I stopped to wipe away the water and search for my keys when I caught something at the corner of my eye. I glanced around and saw Dom heading my way, looking annoyed.

“Dom, what—” I started to call.

“Nice seeing you on your feet,” someone interrupted behind me.

Confused, I whirled around and saw Leslie leaning against Dom’s Mustang, his cat-eyes practically shining in the dark.

I stilled. How the hell did he get there so fast and without me noticing?

Then I remembered. There were only a few instances where I saw their creepy power back at the church, and it always made me nervous.

I stood my ground, knowing Dom was close now. Twin snakes between me, hard to know how friendly they really were.

I dealt with the one in front of me first. “You’ve seen me on my feet for a while.”

Leslie tilted his head. “Not sure what you—”

“Don’t,” I snapped. “Don’t play. I know you’ve been watching me.”

I felt Dom’s hand on my shoulder and I flinched away. “No! I don’t want your comfort,” I told him. “And I don’t want your snide remarks,” I told Leslie.

Leslie put up his hands. “Alright.”

I glared at him before I swiftly made for my driver side door. As I fumbled looking for my keys, Dom came to stand nextto Leslie and signed aggressively. Leslie whispered something back.

As I found my keys, I unlocked my door and threw my bag into the passenger, getting in and starting the car. I went to shut the door, then stopped.

I got out and stormed back over to where they stood. They stopped talking as I faced them.

“I might need your help, but I don’t want it.” My voice cracked. “I wouldn’t even be here if my sister wasn’t involved in your bullshit.”

“We didn’t—” Lez started.

“I know but you created the monster!” I shouted over the roll of thunder. “And now my sister is missing! And I don’t trust you, I never can after what you did. And now I have to deal with this awful shit from you two. It’s like I’m being punished and I don’t know why.” My throat started to tighten, and I had to look away from them. “This changes nothing. I don’t forgive you for what you did to Eve. And for leaving me.”

They were quiet.

I shook my head. I went back to my car door, then turned to them. “Find my sister. Make this right.”

Sliding into the driver side, I shut my door and wiped away an angry tear before shifting into gear. Backing out of the lot, I refused to meet their eyes as I took off into the night.

CHAPTER SEVEN

I slipped off my gloves, throwing them into the trash before moving to the sink and scrubbing my hands. Blood stained my apron, splatter from the leg I had to cut off on the last corpse. As I rinsed off, my eyes drifted over to the clock. Seven fifteen in the evening.

Three days now since I’d spoken to Dom and had my little snap with Leslie. Three days of dead silence.

Maybe I messed up. What if they decided to say “fuck it” after all and ghosted me for good, not wanting to bother with all the trouble? It wasn’t their problem, they didn’t take my sister, and they were no longer with the Serpents.

I shut off the water and slipped over to the desk, sliding in the chair and pulling up the report of the last patient, filling in the remaining details before it was time to head home.

At least Jamie had come down to the city like he said he would. He stayed with me for most of the weekend. Besides hanging with my family and calling the station for any updates, we stayed in my apartment as Jamie did a deep-dive on everything he could find on the Order of the Serpent.

“They sound more like a DnD group than a gang.” Jamie snorted as he clicked away from one website to the next.
