“But you couldn’t be bothered, Landon. You think everything belongs to you. And I’m finally going to show you that you can’t steal everything you fucking want.” I snap a few more pictures, gathering all the proof I need to take down this asshole.
I already have an email drafted to all major news outlets, small presses, journalists, reporters, and paparazzi from this burner phone I bought just for this purpose. I won’t send the email until I’m on my way out of this building, then I’ll wipe my prints, stomp on it, and toss it in the trash. His days of being successful are over.
I return the files to where they belong, placing the lid on them before closing the drawer, then making my way out with the janitor’s cart. Grinning from ear to ear, I return the cart and then leave the building.
Walking back to my car, I send the email and wait for the empire he built on lies to finally crumble into a pile of ash like it deserves.
When I turn on my phone, missed texts and calls from Dove come through, and without checking any of the messages, I call back.
“Where are you? Are you hurt?”
“I’m fine, Dove. I’m on my way home to you. It’s taken care of.”
“It’s over?” she asks.
“It’s over.”
And we can finally live our lives without Landon always interrupting our happiness.
EPILOGUE
DOVE
Winston wasted no time.Last night when he came back from gathering intel from Vain Corporation, he booked a wedding and honeymoon getaway. We arrive first, and then family and friends. We just want a few days to ourselves before the chaos happens. Even my mom offered to travel with baby Winston so we could truly just be alone.
“I’m excited to finally meet your family instead of talking to them on a video call.”
“I’m nervous about you meeting Wyatt. He likes to have a lot of fun when he’s at the beach. It’s as if he’s a teenager again. Be ready to play Marco Polo an ungodly amount of times,” he laughs, turning to look at me. “Which I’ll admit, I’m very excited to play, but don’t tell him that. It will get to his head.”
I zip my mouth shut and giggle.
“I love that sound.” He grips my face and yanks me forward, smashing his lips against mine. “Do it again.”
“Make me do it again,” I flirt, slipping my finger down his chest.
“Excuse me? Mr. Warrick?”
Winston has a flash of annoyance on his face from being interrupted by the flight attendant.
“Yes?” he asks.
“I’m so sorry to interrupt, but you’re going to want to watch this.” She turns on the TV, then turns the volume up so we can hear, then flips to the correct channel.
I can’t believe Winston hasn’t used this private jet more often, and he still flies on commercial planes.
“Oh my god,” I gasp when Landon pops up on the screen.
I glance at Winston to see a small smirk on his lips. He takes a swig of scotch as he watches the news.
“It worked,” I whisper, grabbing Winston’s hand. “It worked!”
“Landon Vainton, the CEO of Vain Corporation, has been arrested. The Vain Corporation is known for its medical devices, anything ranging from sutures to heart valves?—”
“Turn it off,” Winston orders.
“What? Winston, let’s watch and see what happens.”
“It’s just a replay of what we already know. I want to know what his sentence will be. Until then, I don’t care. I just want to spend my vacation with you and get married. I don’t want him to be a part of our lives anymore. He’s gone. He’s ruined. His employees didn’t lose their jobs, as I own his building now and they work for me. They’ve received generous bonuses and paid time off until the building is renovated for what I will be needing them to do. All is well, Love Dove. I don’t want to talk about himanymore.” He takes my hand and kisses it like he always does, making my heart warm.
