He takes my hand off his cock and wraps an arm around my waist to support me. “Woah, hey, you’re okay. No more pushing yourself, Dove. This was what I was worried about.” He guides me to the built-in bench and has me sit down.

“I’ve missed you,” I admit, unable to take my eyes away from him. “I’ve dreamed of having you again and I’m so tired. I’m in so much pain and yet, I don’t care about any of that when all I want to do is to be skin to skin with you. Not necessarily sex, but our bodies touching, our skin touching. I want to feel your warmth.”

He holds out his hands to help me stand, then sit down again, easing me down on his lap. His arms slide around me, the warm water splashing onto us as it hits the ground. His chin settles on my shoulders, holding me with patience and understanding.

I take a deep breath in, relaxing when I feel his body against mine. This. This is exactly what I wanted from him.

“You’ll have me in every way, shape, and form. Forever, Dove. If you want my warmth, then I will drain it until I’m cold so you can have it. I will give you anything and everything. You never have to ask, Dove. When we’re done, I’ll hold you in bed with our son, and we’ll get room service. If you want, we’ll stay in bed for the next few days until the conference. And by then, my personal assistant will be here. You won’t have to leave this room if you don’t want, even though I’d love to have you in my sight the entire time. I don’t trust Landon. He’s a snake and I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes to any length to show revenge.”

“Tell me about what happened between you and him?” I rub my hand up and down his arm to show my support.

He lets out a big, long sigh. “He was my roommate back in college. Back then, we were best friends too. We both loved medicine. With medicine, came money, and when you’re that young, money was everything, even if we came from some of the wealthiest families in the city. Landon is a doctor, I don’t know if you know that.”

“I do,” I mumble, wondering how a man like that was able to graduate medical school.

“As you know, the Vain corporation designs and invents medical devices. It’s supposed to be the leading technology to save more lives, but it all started in our dorm room when we were in medical school. I invented a certain suture that helps fight an infection at the incision. The idea was good. I had all the research, and I even practiced the sutures on myself.” He holds up his left arm and flips it over, showing multiple scars.

“Landon wanted to partner up. He said we could be partners to create new medical innovations to change the game of the industry. I was all about it, but it was important that I still practiced medicine. I wanted to be a general surgeon, and I knew my journey was already going to be a lot easier than my friends because of my last name. I got placed at Warrick General and Landon did not. He didn’t get placed. He stole all my ideas, all my research, and that’s how he ended up with the business he has. After practicing medicine and needing to choose between his or another person’s company for medical devices, I always choose the other person. I don’t trust him. He cuts corners. He lies, cheats, and steals. I know that his medical devices fail which has resulted in patient death, but not enough to close his doors.”

I sit on his lap, stunned. I knew Landon was a piece of work, but I didn’t know he was vile to his core. There is nothing redeemable about Landon. “I’m so sorry he stole all of your hardwork,” I say, leaning my head against his shoulder. “I know every invention inside and out, but I don’t remember seeing those types of sutures.”

“Because he no longer uses them. They cost him too much money to produce so now he sells regular sutures.”

“Does that mean you can take your idea back?”

He kisses my bare shoulder. “No. Unfortunately, he has the patent for them. They’re his. That’s fine. I’ve created other wonderful medical inventions that are better than his. I don’t like him and won’t ever like him. I refuse to allow him to ruin you. He’s too good at that. His livelihood is based on the ability to ruin everything that holds promise or is good. I won’t let him do that to you. You’re too good for the world to be in the presence of someone who only wants to cause destruction.”

“I was excited when I first got the job. I had just graduated, the pay was decent, the benefits were great, but he was cruel every single day and he has only gotten crueler. I know cruelty is part of the world but?—”

“No. Don’t normalize the bad treatment just because cruelty is a norm. It shouldn’t be a norm, Love Dove. Warrick hospitals have the highest pay, the lowest turnover rate, up to one year of maternal and parental paid leave, sick days, paid time off, and vacation days. Sure, the job has great days and bad days. People’s moods shift every day because we are human, but the overall work environment is great.”

“Up to a year? Paid? I got six weeks paid, I think, but I had a feeling he was going to fire me while I was on leave. He hates it when I’m gone for a few days. He’d think I was slacking off or something.”

“You don’t have to worry about him anymore,” Winston says. “You have me now. Come on, let’s get you washed up and get you into bed so you can finally rest.”

“That sounds good. I’m getting exhausted.”

“Let me bathe you.” He helps me up again and I lean against the wall, suddenly so tired that I can barely keep my eyes open.

The washcloth he uses is gentle on my skin. Winston takes his time washing each arm, his touch only making it that much harder to stay awake from how good it feels. Next, he washes each leg.

“I’m going to squeeze the rag on your stomach so the soap runs down the incisions. No pressure but we want to make sure those incisions stay clean.”

I nod, I think. I’m too tired to do or say anything. All I know is how good his touch feels. All I know is how good it feels to be taken care of by someone who isn’t myself.

Suddenly, his hands are in my hair, massaging my scalp, and I groan from how good it feels. Winston chuckles, placing another kiss on the back of my neck. I don’t know how long this treatment lasts, but my entire body feels light, as if I’m in the air.

Before I know it, the water shuts off, and I’m being patted dry. Next, he’s towel-drying my hair.

“Thank you for taking care of me,” I whisper through a sleepy haze.

“I’ll take care of you until my very last breath, and when I’m gone, you’ll be set for life with money. It will be the only way I’ll be able to take care of you when I’m gone.” He wraps me in a soft, warm robe.

“I don’t want to talk about that, Winston. You’re already planning for when you’re gone when I’ve only just got you.”

He swings me into his arms and carries me to the bedroom. “I’m twenty years older than you, Love Dove. When you’re my age, I’ll be sixty-five. It’s something we have to go into this knowing, that I’m probably going to die first and there might be a period of time where you have to take care of me. I would rather hire someone but?—”

I lean up, pushing through the pain to kiss him. “Don’t you dare. I’ll take care of you.”
