He smirked. “I’ll try, okay?”

Smiling, I nodded. “That’s all I’m asking.” I walked up to him and went to my toes to kiss his cheek. “This still doesn’t get anyone out of my talk at lunch.” Turning, I called, “Bye, Mum.”

“Later, girl,” she replied with humour in her tone.

One day soon, they’d see I wasn’t a little girl who needed their overprotectiveness.

No, I wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, but I wasn’t stupid either. I could tell who was a douche a mile away. And if the guy or gal hid their douchiness, well, I’d eventually figure them out in the end.

But it was up to me to learn from my mistakes.

CHAPTER TWO

Later in the week, as I walked back into the garage from the compound waiting for the guy who wanted his car serviced, my phone rang. I pulled it out of my back pocket and hit Answer.

“Yo, bro, what’s shaking?”

“You’re lucky I’m even talkin’ to you.”

Laughing, I asked, “Are you still butthurt I didn’t get my first tattoo from you?”

“Who’s your blood brother?” Texas demanded.

“You. But you weren’t in town and Dragon was. I promise, the next one I get I’ll come to you in Ballarat for it.”

“You fuckin’ better. The reason I rang was to see if you wanted to come stay next weekend.”

“Aww, is my bro missing me?” I teased. Texas and I had always been close, and I was over-the-freaking-moon happy that we’d stayed that way even when he moved an hour away to live with the love of his life, Maya.

“Like a hole in the head,” Texas deadpanned, but I knew he was messing with me.

“Can you do another tattoo that weekend? I’ve always wanted a phoenix. It’ll look so cool on my thigh. What do you think?”

“We could make it work. Dodge and Low are comin’ too.” Texas never chose to call Dodge and Low Mum and Dad like I did. He was just that bit older than me when they took us in.

“Yay, family time with everyone. Maya will be home, right? I want to know all the gossip.” I gasped. “We should invite Julian over too. He knows everything about everyone.”

Texas sighed. “I’ll see, okay?”

“Wait, is Maya pregnant? Did you hear Channa is? I can’t wait until Channa has her baby. How do you think Coyote will handle the birth?” I laughed at the thought. These bikers were tough, but when it came to their partners being in pain, they didn’t do well. “Hang on, back to Maya. Is she pregnant? Oh my God, imagine if she is and it’s at the same time as Channa. That would be so cool. So, is she?” When he didn’t reply right away, I pressed, “Texas?”

“Jesus, Rom. Just come to Ballarat, yeah?” When he hung up, I gasped and stared down at my phone.

She’s pregnant, for sure.

That he didn’t say anything told me everything.

Maya was going to have a little baby.

Holy shit, I’m going to be an aunty.

I did a little happy dance.

“What are you doin’, kiddo?”

I squealed and spun to see Dad grinning like an idiot for scaring me.

Shit. I couldn’t say anything. I was sure I was right, but in case I wasn’t, I had to keep my lips sealed. Also, I was sure Texas and Maya wanted to tell Mum and Dad instead of hearing the news from me.
